Fox Grip 2 damper oil change

What a mess. I was doing the Grip2 damper oil change per the instructions on the Fox site (2021 GRIP2 VVC Rebuild | Bike Help Center | FOX). Why is it when I go to purge the air from the damper (after I fill the tube 1/2 way with oil) per step #42, the system just spits out oil from the top in a violent manner? This isn't when the shaft is being pushed up, but when it's fully extended...the oil shoots out the top like a geyser. Any ideas what's causing this?

And now I can't torque the top cap down because there's oil everywhere causing spinning while torqueing. Ugh.

I have 2 Grip 2 dampers. Are you suppose to purge the oil out on lower leg service? I just replace the 40 cc of oil that it calls for and think that's enough!
What's in the damper will get mostly replaced thru cycling!

the open LSR circuit.

And you're supposed to cycle the rebound rod slow anyway to prevent any foaming of the oil etc.

No it doesnt. The oil ingestion rate is something like 5ml per 200 hours of riding. I change the oil every 120 hours and change the seals at 240.

I think i saw it on their 2020 service link to change the oil in the damper as part of normal service (and no need to do a full rebuild unless something is broken). Assumed this holds for the 2021 as well.

@reo-fahrer slow may be the key! I'm guessing when going fast the oil by the rebound circuit has nowhere to go and shoots out the top of the circuit. Will try today!

Oil ingestion rate depends on how hard you ride and how fast it compresses. Compress it slowly and it's nothing. Compress it fast and the oil film can't be wiped off the shaft so gets into the damper. Compression speeds can be 3-5 times faster than rebound so it doesn't return the same way.

Makes sense. I was more responding to the suggestion that the oil mostly gets cycled through/replaced during normal use, when it is in actuality only a very small amount that gets cycled out.

Just found the quote: "This can let in around 5cc of oil after 125 hours of use, which may not sound like much but it all has to be accounted for, and while oil getting into a cartridge generally be a bad thing, it's not when your whole system is designed with that in mind ":

The damper side bath oil of my 38 got brown after half a season. Got the bike late July 2022 and it was a rainy summer here in Quebec. Should I expect the damper oil to be dirty as well? Do it needs to be replaced?
Thanks

Cycle the shaft slowly, and only a few cms. You're only clearing air from the rebound circuit. Cover the top and don't look in it.
