 I have seen various posters get flammed for trying to sell stuff on certain forums and would like to understand what the protocol is for this. Especially if you have something that would reach a specific demographic via these forums. You could sell in the classifieds, but depending on your product that wouldn't be the best route because those who use the Eastern Canada forum may not be looking for anything in the classifieds. Basically, I would like to get some feedback from you guys so that I do not cross the line of what is an acceptable practice here. Any thoughts are appreciated good, bad, or otherwise...

Good question. Not sure what the exact "protocol" or guidelines are. I would think that if someone was advertising something for sale here they could be reprimanded by a moderator, but seeing as we don't have one here on Eastern Canada board, I think it wouldn't bother most of the regulars here...
I think many here would appreciate if they could find out from the local forum about products like, say, a helmet cam video of a 24hrs Solstice course and Tue Night race saries course, if such was available! :D

The guidelines are as follows.

MTBR.com Message Board Posting Guidelines
(applies to all message board posts, avatars, signatures, profile information, and anything posted on our message boards)

Our mission is to help mtn. bike enthusiasts and foster a healthy community. The message boards are the core of our community. As a result, we would appreciate it if people read and abide by these guidelines.

The Mtbr staff and volunteer moderators monitor the message boards, removing inappropriate content. The purpose of these guidelines is to explain what kind of messages are "inappropriate," and therefore will be deleted. We are explaining these guidelines beforehand, so if a message is removed everyone will understand why it was removed. In general, we err on the side of leaving messages up. The entire site is premised on sharing product information, so as one might imagine we are strong proponents of free speech. That being said, here are some specific reasons why we remove certain messages:

-The message is an advertisement or spam.
(NOTE: It has been an "unwritten" rule for us to let it slide, when people who buy an Mtbr Classified ad, post in the forums. However, due to the recent increase in these ads, we will now be locking these types of posts. And you may NOT post an ad in more than 1 forum.)
Well, those are the Guidelines.

IMO, if you want to sell something, you can post it here. In the title of the message, state that it is spam, and don't create crafty titles to lure people into reading your post. Don't post in more than one forum.

If you do advertise something, i will not report it.

Of course, the goal is to have the classified section as the section to buy and sell. We don't want the forums flooded with spam, but as long as the volume stays low, i dont think it should be a problem.

i think this post alone goes to fricking far you monkey....sure you never ACTUALLY listed your item(s) but now I KNOW that you have items for sale and DAMNIT it hurts my brain.

anyone opposed to starting a fleamarket thread INSIDE the regional eastern forum??? those that dont WANT to look at mtbmistermister's used briefs dont have to...those that like previously used lube can look...just a though...the only one for the day.

goodnight.

Funny you should mention that...

The way i see it is that we have a pretty small group of regulars who post here. I dont think anyone minds if theres the odd 'for sale' post. Should we receive the traffic that the socal boards recieve then maybe itd be an issue. But since 75% of the posters in the forum here are within 50 k of the GTA it may actually be mutually beneficial. And given that we average 1 or 2 new threads a day its not really an issue.

Just my 2 cents...

Your right, and this is why I asked. I had not read those and now that I have seen them I will use the classifieds or find another means of promoting it. Thanks to all for the information...

Hey Craig, what about Peter's suggestion with the fleamarket? I know, I know - the guideline's state the $2 fee, thread linked to an MTBR Classified ad - understood (although not having PayPal as a pay option really sucks).

I ask because ultimately, with MY purchasing etiquette I really don't buy anything that's posted here (honestly and respectfully). Nearly everything posted is in the U.S. and i'm not as willing to "shop here" (although I look) as I am not on home turf (Canada Customs and other obvious reasons). I love it here and ultimately this would be my only "real" "complaint" - no support of helping fellow rider's out with buying goodies ..... because the info doesn't exist.

Now, IF there was something posted here and in WC - i'd be hunting ..... daily.

Is there any way that something could be arranged that cater's more to other's with like thoughts? Is our only hope a Stickied thread with links to ..... here (MTBR Classified's)? (ducks head after suggesting "another" stickied thread)

I'm glad I cover my butt when I say things like "this isn't spam because i'm not promoting Misfit Psycles" or "this isn't spam because no money is involved". PHEW!

Oh, Craig - one LAST q - if, just IF someone was GIVING something away for FREE (!!!!!) - free to post (in a respectfull and appropriate manner, of course), right?

I'm in Canada too, so I've never really used the MTBR classifieds to buy and sell anything since the classifieds went to a pay system. From what I've seen it definitely doesn't cater to Canadians but I do know that there are some Canadians using the classifieds.

There are other free Canadian based bike classifieds out there, but you probably already know that.

I'll let Gregg know about this thread to see if there is anyway to make the MTBR classifieds more Cdn friendly.

well then why not abide by the rules and list in the classifieds as LOCAL PICKUP only or some schnitzle. then use a thread in the eastern canada forum to link to the classified ad...all rules met, local offerings made...

sounds easy enough to me.

in hindsight i understand the NO UNLINKED requirement, otherwise you would have the 'local' fleamarket thread filled nightly with penis pumps and viagra knock offs. not that that wont happen anyway...pm for the swedish version (similar to that in austin powers) slightly used...

Yup, that works and keeps the powers that be happy.

Listing that you will only ship to Canada, or Ontario, or must be picked up in person, will work.

Osokolo hows that Truth frame, is it all what its CRACKED up to be.
that is an uderstatement.

it is BROKEN. the seat tube and top tube are broken clean through...

i stripped off all the components last night and today i took it back to my LBS - they will ship it back tomorrow for warranty replacement...
good thing - i am getting a new frame -
BAD BAD thing - my team missed the podium opportunity and my day was screwed...

i'll post some pictures once the warranty process is finished. i think it is unfair to post anything until then...

NO! This isn't the new frame you just bought, is it??!?!?!??! Are you okay?

I fail to understand why it's unfair to post pics of a broken frame. The warranty replacement is irrelevant in this matter, IMHO.

I was going to get the truth before i got my superlight. I heard several reports of cracking though..and that was a big reason for me going with santa cruz.
