i've come to realize that my front disc issues are due to the caliper not being parallel to the rotor. :madman: does someone sell a tool for facing the posts on the fork or should i attack the hayes adapter first? thanks

Several companies sell a disc tab facing tool. THese include Park, Hope, CTS, Cyclus, and several more.
The Park is the most adaptable (works with almost all combinations) and is also the cheapest (or close to).

Your post says "fork post facing" is it a Manitou fork with post style mounts? I am not aware of any tool available to face a post style fork, but you may be able to file it to a reasonable degree of accuracy.

Most manufacturers do not recommend or endorse facing the disk tabs. Also, forks with magnesium lowers may require special treatment on the bare metal after facing (rather debatable though...).

What kind of fork is it and what brake are you running?

It's a fox float rl with a hayes 9. so it's not so much facing the fork tabs as it is planing the adapter mounts. i was on park tool's site and only saw headset facing tools. is there another name?

It's listed under the WHat's New section of their site, and called the DT-1. Here is a link:

When I asked a Fox rep about facing the disk tabs on their forks, he said that it would void the warranty. In my opinion, if they do not recommend facing the disk tabs, then they should gaurantee that they are correctly aligned, I would contact Fox and see what they recommend.

That being said, I have used the tool on several forks and it has usually solved or greatly improved an alignment issues.

This is an IS fork and caliper not post mounted right? With IS mounted calipers you place thin washers between the caliper and the mount to shim the caliper until it is parallel and centered on the rotor. These washer like shims come with the caliper but you can get them from any decent LBS.

I agree with deltariders response above. I work in a shop and have had this issue of excessive paint or poorly aligned disc tabs with several Fox forks including the disc mount on my own fork. I had really bad squealing from some Hope disc brakes and after facing the tabs, the problem went away. The caliper lined up straight with the rotor and all was good. Most shops have the disc tab facing tool and it should cost about $10 - $15 bucks and take just a few minutes (if they aren't busy). I can't see why this would void the warranty. As deltarider said they should come perfectly prepped from the factory if they don't want you to face them. Good Luck.
