The Suntour XCR fork on my bike needs some maintenance and I'm confused about a few items. It's a basic fork with lockout and preload adjustments. I found good manufacturer instructions for pulling it open and reassembling it. Upon doing so, a few questions came up.

For one, I can tell there's very little fork grease left inside along the sleeves, it's easy to see that just takes adding some Slickoleum, a good tip from mtnbiker72. What's a good way to clean out all the old stuff in there?

There was no sign of oil inside either side of the fork, it either vaporized or never had any. The Park Tools online how-to mentions adding 15ml of 5W to 10W oil into each side of the fork. That's not mentioned anywhere in the Suntour service manual. What's better, oil or no oil? What else?
