getting my new salsa soon,
just wondering what the consensus on fork travel for this steel beauty is?
ive heard everyone is pretty satisfied with 80mm, but will i get away with 100mm?
probably putting on the Reba (non u-turn set at 100mm) or the Float (internally set at 100mm)
any thoughts?

Do a search for the affects of a longer travel fork on a frame's geometry.

In a nutshell, longer travel fork or a fork designed for more free riding will raise the front end of your bike, in effect decreasing the head angle, making it more stable but also more sluggish.

For example, I have a custom steel hardtail with 71.5 head tube angle that was designed around a 70mm fork. My skills have gotten worse over the years and the bike was getting to be a slight handful when tired in the twisties, and on real steep stuff. I changed to a Black 80. The Blacks is designed with a taller crown compared to the XC oriented Skareb. So an 80mm Black is actually taller than a 80mm Skareb.

The 80mm Black has 'slowed' my bike down just enough to make to make it handle more stable but it did not slow it down so much that it was a couch in the single track.

Talk to the designers of the bike and see what length fork the frame was designed around. Other options are forks with travel adjustment as well then you can dial it in.
