Flipping the Switch

1268 Views 15 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Curveball
It's that time of year again. Because of a warm December it's past that time of the year.

The season has changed and until Spring, my thoughts will turn to snow and skiing and mountains to visit. All the beautiful new bikes you put in front of me will mean nothing. It will be skis that hold my fancy now.

Come Spring (the worst of all seasons to my mind) the switch will flip again, and I will think nothing of skis and snow and mountains to visit. *

* Yeah, I know many will say I can ride down mountains but that was not the point.

Enjoy! I spent 7 years living at 9300' near several ski areas and skiing between 100-220 days per year, but got it out of my system. I rarely ski more than 3-5 days a season anymore. As badly as we need moisture, I am enjoying riding in this abnormally warm and dry weather.

Things have finally changed enough for me to flip the switch too. It's ski time!

My life requires change and going from one passion to another provides the balance I need. I never got more then 86 days skiing in one season, but I do live in a mid-Atlantic state. Like your ski passion, my surfing passion has abated in recent years.

We've had an unusually dry winter this year. The last two years had three feet of snow in the yard at this time. The ski resorts are open and blowing snow but the riding is still good and I don't board until after the holidays when the tourists thin out but I have my passes and they'll pay for themselves.

Itching to take the Warpig out this winter. It's been really dry here (Albuquerque)
I'm riding trails I haven't ridden in December. Ever. Santa Fe is only 13% open and Taos is really limited as well. Looks like we're getting some snow in the next few days though.

Because of the retired military price, I paid off my Epic Pass in three days. I find if I am there (there being anywhere) for first chair, I get about two hours when tourists are not an issue.

Man, that looks so fun. I had a fat bike for a long time but have never ridden groomed snow on one. I really need to make a trip and grab a rental sometime.

Yep, just got back from a trip to the SE corner of the state and was skiing the best powder of my life.

No switch flipping here in NZ. Winter = lights, mud and waterproof clothing. Riding continues year round.

That's how it goes around here too typically. This year, the snow has dropped down from the mountains and into the lowland riding areas which really makes skiing a nicer option.

I can often go mountain biking one day of the weekend and then skiing the next day.
