I would go for something with 7" travel, and a single crown fork, either a 66 or totem. Also if you can find something with fairly adjustable shock, e.g. a rocco tst. Both of these just so it can be fairly versatile, rather than a pure race beast.
A good bet would be an 08 stinky deluxe. But a mongoose pinn'r might be good. Depends how much you want to spend.

For a little more you can get a Kona Stinky. I was like you and so far am impressed with my Stinky. Look at WheelWorld.com, they seem to have the best deals. I bought the frame and built it myself but it would have been cheaper to get the complete bike from them.

Yeah but you can also end up with a 2nd hand bike with great components that are just about worn out - you have to know what you're looking for / buying.

If you do end up going new maybe check out the Norco / Giant range.

Its a hard market for selling used right now (at least in CO). So that's great for you as a buyer and you'll probably find some good deals for around $1,000.

I'd recommend Kona-Stinky/Giant-Faith/Specialized-Big Hit as great bikes to find used cheap.

FOr your first DH/FR bike, don't worry about getting high end anything because you are going to crash a lot and beat the snot out of it all anyway . Look for something with SRAM x7 or better on the drivetrain. A single crown fork like a 66 or Domain. The Kona Stinky is a great bike to begin with. Transition Dirtbag is another good choice. The Big Hit is worth a close look too. The Giant Faith is decent, but a complete tank and if it is not set up right you can end up fighting it (maybe the geo just doesn't work for me).
