Felton, Betonte Creating Mountain Bike Documentary

MAY 05, 2005 -- TRUCKEE, CA (BRAIN)--Industry writer Vernon Felton and producer Gregg Betonte are producing a film to chronicle the birth and boom of the mountain bike.

Felton is editor-at-large of Bike magazine and a contributing editor to Bicycle Retailer and Industry News, and Betonte owns Side Effects Productions, a multimedia production studio that has worked with OLN and Shimano, as well as with major cable and broadcast networks.

Felton is confident that the movie's personalities, events and company stories are compelling enough for general audiences and venues like the Sundance Film Festival, where it may debut.

The film won't be a retread of the old "who invented the mountain bike" story, but will instead look at the evolution of the mountain bike through the wider lens of the social and creative climate of 1970s Northern California, to the mountain bike's boom and mass acceptance, to contemporary issues like trail access and what freeriding means to the industry.

To help fund the project, Bentonte took out a second mortgage on his home. Interviews for the film will start soon, but the producers are still on the lookout for archival footage, photos, bikes or parts from the early Marin County days. Those with materials for the film can call Side Effects Productions at (530) 550-7469.
