Nice looking bike, and decent specs. I wish bikes came with better wheels though- the difference in performance with Apex vs Force is barely noticeable, but having a nice wheel set with a high engagement hub is immediately appreciated.

I am curious about the weight difference between the Cyclingtips and Velonews reviews. James' small weighed in at 19.33lbs and Fred's XL weighed in at 18.4lbs.

Fred's wheels were about 200g lighter, but I can't imagine there was another 200+ gram difference between the FSA and ENVE handlebars. Plus frame size difference is pretty drastic.

Just got the bike put together. It is a gorgeous bike and looks fantastic. I like the green color even more than what I was expecting. The DT Swiss spline 1800’s look the part and have bladed spokes.

Straight out of the box, but no reflectors my large AXS Elite with 42cm bars and no upgrades weighs in at 9.26kgs or 20.4lbs

I really don’t understand how gravel bikes weigh so much. Hardtail mtbs with front suspension easily weigh less than fully rigid gravel.

I will be swapping wheels (obviously going tubeless, rotors, handlebar, stem, seatpost and saddle. My goal is to have it under 18lbs after that.

A few years ago I built up a hardtail for racing. Cost me about $3k (which is $2k less than this “budget friendly” build) and it weighed 19.5 lbs ready to ride: cages, pedals, tools, and a dropper post.

Just want to reiterate that the bike looks fantastic and there are probably not many bikes out there that come in at this price point and offer what the Shafer does. Can’t wait to ride it, but CO is finally getting all the snow we need.

I will go yell at some clouds now

Swapping wheels right now. Front has already shed over a lb.

Also two minor issues. Bike came with tan wall tires which I guess was a crapshoot on getting as the site doesn’t list them, but half the pictures are with tan wall and half aren’t. Not really my thing, but it looks alright and gravel tires seem to last about 4 rides so they will probably be gone shortly.

Second is I took off the FD mount. When I screwed the bolt back in some paint cracked and flaked off around it.

Just got done swapping wheels and rotors. Bike out of the box was 9.26kg, it is now 8.23kg or 18.1lbs. No sealant in yet as I won't ride it for a while, but wheel swap will look to save me almost exactly 1kg.

Still planning on swapping the handlebar, seatpost, and saddle and should loose probably another .5kg/1lb.

Won't be a Crux, but it will be far more capable. And affordable.

I received my Comp Apex build not quite two weeks ago, and have been out on it a few times. Extremely happy with the bike, and the whole Fezzari experience. I was given an accurate delivery date, kept informed throughout the process, and the bike arrived well-packed. I have been very happy with the way that it rides, other than the thawed, slushy gravel roads, and 40 degree rain that came with it. But hey, it came right as all of the snow disappeared for fatbiking, leaving the trails too muddy to ride on any bike.

The Shafer was high up on my list, but at the end of the day I wanted steel. Nice looking bikes though!

As for the name, I have a Fezzari La Sal and they could write Turd Furgeson on the downtube of that thing and it wouldn't matter to me. It rides amazing. I have no doubt that the Shafer is the same.

Mine showed up today. I got the same kit, but in dolphin grey and it has the tan wall tires as well.

My medium came in at 20lbs on the nose as shipped. I have some dt350 btlos carbon wheels on the way now along with some (all black) Gravel king SS tires, so should drop 1.5-2 pounds next week. Only other changes I will make are lighter cranks at some point and saddle swap with maybe an xplr dropper addition. I'll get a lighter cassette when this one wears out.

Good to know the weight. So it sounds like roughly a 200-300g difference between the M and L frames.

I was also contemplating swapping cranks as the e13 xcx would save close to 400g, but I don’t have a deal anymore and I am waiting to see if the Rival PM issues get sorted.

What cassette would you swap to? Not a whole lot of options that are significantly lighter. I have an e13 Helix 9-46 11 speed on my Niner and it is great, but I don’t think the Rival RD can handle the 9-50 12 speed Helix or other Eagle options.

Garabruk?

I swapped out the seatpost and saddle and saved about 350g. Unsure of the saddle durability, but it was cheap enough. Bike is now 7.89kg or 17.4 lbs.

So already 200g lighter than a 56cm Crux Expert. About $1500 cheaper including tax, shipping and upgrades.

I figure to lose about 150-200g more with my stem and bar swap. This will get me to almost the claimed weight of the 56cm Crux Pro for half the price.

Not bad considering my frame is also the equivalent of a 58cm and the Crux comes with 38mm tires vs 40mm on the Shafer. Plus the Shafer is much more versatile than the Crux.
