I am very interested in the Stanton Sherpa, which features proprietary replaceable dropouts that Stanton calls Swopouts. The only problem for me is that Stanton doesn't currently make a SS Swopout, and have no immediate plans to do so. How feasible is it that I could provide the geared dropout to a fabricator and have them fabricate a horizontal slider version?

I know nothing about machining, so any ideas about how easy/hard this would be, and what someone might charge for a couple of pairs would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

The path of least resistance would be to have any CNC machine shop make a track end style insert for you. I've had this done locally. Be sure to bring them your current dropouts so they can go off of that.

Just add a Surly Snuggnut and bolt on axle and you're in business. You'll have to measure the necessary axle length based on how thick the dropouts end up being)

It will end up looking like this but with whatever bolt pattern Stanton use.

Literally anything is possible. And not even necessarily hard. It's really a question of how expensive, and how much you are willing to pay to have it done.

5-axis machine time alone is usually $75-100/hr, and that only comes into play once everything is setup and programmed.

Why don't you try getting a quote from a place like this and then tell us what they charge for our information:

This is what I am hoping to do, just wanted to confirm that it wasn't a stupid idea. Snuggnut was the plan, and it looks like between Surley and Roberts Axle Project I should be able to find a workable axle. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. If I can't find someone local I will look into that. Whatever I end up doing I will report back.

It shouldn't be a problem, but I would advise against having some made for sale if the OEM has any patents or trademarks on the design. We have too many lawyers.
It's not illegal unless you try to sell it. Even then it's a proprietary shape and size, not like you're going to get rich making them.
