Fairfax/Tamarancho Riders beware of theft

From the "don't let this happen to you" dept. A new Cannondale Carbon Rize 2 mtn bike was stolen from the main Fairfax parking lot (Fair-Anselm plaza lot, opposite Ironsprings pub) Monday around 9PM. The bike was chained to the back of a vehicle, but the chain was cut. There have been recent bike thefts in the area, in addition to the break-in at Sunshine Bikes (where a number of high end bikes were stolen even as the alarm was sounding).

The days of leaving bikes unlocked outside of Ironsprings while you enjoy a cool-n-sudsy are over. And your bike lock had better have an attack dog tied to it if your vehicle is out of sight. (Don't have a designer attack dog either) It would help to keep an eye out for theft in general. As I was writing up this post a friend called to advise that someone she knows had a new bike taken from inside a locked vehicle in SF (window was smashed for access).

Below is some info on the Cannondale that was taken. It would be appreciated if anyone seeing a suspicious post on ebay or craiglist, etc. could send a headsup (post here, or PM me, whatever).

2009 Cannondale Rize 2 (carbon frame) Black, medium size frame, full suspension, lefty fork, SRAM/ Shimano XT derailleurs, Mavic Crosstrail UST wheels, Avid Juicy Carbon Brakes. Frame Serial #: S099000

A dagger to the heart.

The Java Hut lot, possibly the biggest trail head lot in Marin, is not safe? Not that it ever really was but still.
I was locking my bike up outside of Sunshine bikes this summer so I could go use the bathroom and a guy that works there asked me not to lock it to their bike rack...which is fine, but then he said "You don't need to lock it, nobody is going to take it"....

Yeah right, I thought....

At 9pm on a Monday it is no longer a trailhead parking lot, it is a parking lot for a bar with the requisite goings on. On a weekend from 8-5 it is still the safest (relatively) place around.
What a bummer. :madmax:

This is a great 20 lb. stocking stuffer. The only way to crop this is with big ass bolt croppers using the ground for leverage. Please don't rely on cables!

The victim is a huge ally of MTB access in Marin. Keep your eyes open, folks.

I live two blocks from Java Hut and this is really making me think twice about our bike security measures.
You want a bike chain? Then this one is the daddy, the mommy & the whole damn family of bike chains..Seriously forget about all the others, this chain is THE chain. If your in doubt check the vids - they crop just about every other chain on the market without any problems..They try to crop their own chain & brake the croppers..

a buddy of mine had his car window smasehd out and his bag taken from the java hut parking lot on a saturday afternoon in broad daylight.
Oh the humanity!
Signs and survellence cameras may be the next step.

What a bummer? In Fairfax even. :(
Iv'e seen this guy lurking around the parking lot a few times. ;)

Bummer, I'm sorry for your loss.

I thought Marin was perfect, I guess not.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pear Harbor?

Anybody in for seeting up a decoy and making a ............frontier justic...I mean citizens arrest?
Locks

+1 for no cables.....`
I have looked into the lock thing...in the UK, bike theft is rampant, and they review locks all the time. They ALL can be chopped with bolt cutters :eekster: There is one brand that is sold in the UK only, Almax, that claims to be "crop" proof....A thief with a van can have power tools..grinders or hydraulic cutters that can get through anything:madmax:
