VELOCLUB FAIRFAX PRESENTS THE 2ND ANNUAL FAIRFAX FAT TIRE FESTIVAL
Free admission! Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23

The second annual Fairfax Fat Tire Festival will take place on July 22 and
23, 2006 in Fairfax, California.

All of the events on Saturday the 22nd will take place at Central Ball Field
in downtown Fairfax. Events include the Ace of Spades Mountain Bike Poker
Run, a fun ride for all ages and abilities, including a cash payout for the best hand;
a classic bicycle show; bicycle stunt demonstrations by Hans Rey; entertainment by four local bands; and guest speakers including mountain biking legend Charlie Kelly. A special

Film Night in the Park from 8-10 PM will feature clips from the new mountain bike
pioneers documentary "Klunkerz", a new freeride film featuring Hans Rey and
Thomas Frischknecht, and feature film- On Any Sunday

On Sunday, the NORBA sanctioned Friends of Tamarancho Invitational Mountain
Bike Race will take place at Tamarancho Boy Scout Camp, located in Fairfax.

The Junior Race (18 and under), begins at 10:00 AM; the Senior Race (over 18)
at noon. Categories will be grouped on race day according to attendance. Cash
and merchandise prizes will be awarded.
No parking is available due to emergency road closure on upper Iron Springs Road; race course access by bike is mandatory.
From downtown Fairfax, ride to Iron Springs road and the normal singletrack trailhead. Go up that trail (Alchemist tr.) to the T interstion at the top. Go Right (Goldman tr.) and follow to the road crossing. Go HARD left on the dirt toad, into central camp/Start Finish. Please watch for oncoming traffic at all times.

The Festival is held to promote cycling and celebrate Fairfax as the
birthplace of Mountain Biking, and is co-sponsored by Fairfax Chamber of
Commerce. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Downtown Fairfax
Beautification Fund.

Free Valet Bicycle Parking will be provided by the Marin County Bicycle
Coalition.

Anyone know what the course is for the race part?

The DV DH is the weekend after this, but this race sounds pretty fun.... Anyone know where it starts and what the laps consit of etc??

race

The course does a figure 8 through camp, and uses parts of Broken Dam, B-17 and Serpentine, as well as some fire road and "special" race day trails....:thumbsup:

I'll be there for sure. Not racing, but enjoying the old stuff and the history of mtb that Fairfax provides.

Repack Movie Short

Saturday night in the baseball field I'm going to screen a short film entitled KLUNKERZ ON REPACK. Unforseen film festival obligations forbid me from screening the the full-length film KLUNKERZ. Ugh, the weekend of the trials contest I was heading to Tahoe to visit friends and the car broke down. We rescheduled our trip for the weekend of July 22nd...:madman:

Psyched to see that Klunkerz movie some other time. I went to the festival last year to see the early repack footage and I think the movie was actually a 60 minutes story from the 70's on Repack. A little cheesy, but it still got me psyched enough to head out to Repack the following day, where I proceeded to take a high speed wreck at the bottom, off the road and down a bank into a thicket of manzanita and poison oak, just like the pioneers!! :thumbsup: Still have scars from that one.

Repack Stoke

The first weekend of prep for the movie in Fairfax, the day I left to come back to L.A., I hit Joe up for one of the old style Repack maps and proceeded to WALK my Klunker up thing and boogie down...w/toe straps and all! I'm a filmmaker, not a true hardcore cyclist, but it took me well over 6:00 minutes to get down and I thought I was moving. Gary with a 4:22 on the 'Ol '37 Excelsior in '76! Think you can Klunk? Go ahead, I dare you!

The veloclubfairfax.com website will have the race registration function up and running very soon. There will be Paypal feature as well. Race day registration should also be available, and faster than last year.

Clockwise or CounterClockwise?

Anyone know which way the race course rides the trails? Is it one or the other or both? Anyone have details? I'd like to pre-ride the course trails if possible.... :thumbsup:

Race Course

Racers, the course is the same as last year, and as follows:
From central camp start, down camp fireroad to the intersection with Broken Dam trail (just above big bridge), UP Broken Dam trail ("counter-clockwise") to B-17, UP B-17 ("counter-clockwise") to water tank, left down the fireroad back the way you came (two way section on fireroad), Right up fireroad to top of Serpentine, Down Serpentine ("counter-clockwise") to end, onto bypass singletrack, back to beginning.
Please don't pre-ride the fireroad sections, they are closed at all times (as usual) except on race day. Any other sections in camp are off limits except for race day. The best way to practice just the open part of the course is to ride the regular loop counter-clockwise from Broken Dam/big bridge to end of Serpentine. Throw in the rest of the loop for good measure of course...
The entire race course from last year was about 4.5 miles, about 60% singletrack....
This year the race may start on the second half of the loop, to allow the start to sort out more....this would be an uphill start instead of downhill start.

Please remember,
Upper Iron Springs Road is closed due to a landslide.
Riders must access camp via the normal singletrack loop.

Fairfax

Fairfax is only a short drive from Guerneville right? I will be camping there this weekend. Maybe we will drive over for the movie since we will be doing the road and eating thing most of the day.

Going Coastal

Doesn't take too long. I'd go out to Jenner and head down the coast. If you're feeling like some twisties, come in on Bolinas-Fairfax Rd, or stay in the woods on Drake. If you can make it by 3PM, you can still catch Hansy.....:thumbsup:

Klunkerz Movie

Just wanted to let the Nor Cal locals know that the movie is an 'Official Selection' in the Mill Valley Film Fesival in October. That's why I couldn't show the whole thing in the ball field this weekend. I don't have an actual screening date yet, as the MVFF hasn't 'officially' announced the schedule. Thanks to all the Marin locals for their support in making my dream a reality. I hope to see some of you in Fairfax this weekend. I'll be the long-haired guy hanging around the vintage bike display. Oh yeah, it's Fairfax...I'll be the guy in the Fat Tire Flyer T-Shirt. That should make it a little easier to find me. Ride on.

It looks like I'll be headin up there to take pictures of the race, but I got a couple questions. How far of a walk/ride is it from parking to the race start/finish, and also how much of a climb is it? My wife is planning on going and she isn't very comfortable yet on dirt. If its gonna be anything close to technical then we'll probably end up walking up it. This will be my first trip to the park so any good info would be nice

It's about a 30 min ride from Fairfax to the center of Camp....

I plan on using it as my warm up ride and taking it pretty slow - there is about a 15 min road ride/climb to get you to the trailhead then about another 10-15 min singletrack climb to get to the center of camp. I would not call it "easy" but it's not super hard either...... as far as bringing your wife - just note it's 100% uphill to the race start.....

Directions -
From Albertsons in Fairfax find Iron Springs road (there will be a parade of bikers headed there)

- Climb Iron Sprins road until you see a "Tamarancho" sign on the LEFT and a trail head (Alchemist Trail)

- Follow the trailhead up until it forks and then go RIGHT (Goldman trail towards Broken Damn)

- Climb up another 1/2 mile or so until you hit a fire road - follow that to the center of Camp where the start finish is...

(ALSO - I've never done this but it looks like you could just keep riding up Iron Springs road and hit the same fire road at the top of Goldman trail.... )
