I have the yakima blockhead mounts for my truck:

anyone know if its going to be possible to mount these to the stock roof rack of an explorer? its a late 90's style i think. something like this:

they look somewhat sturdy, but i can't really tell what they're really made out of until i drill into them. we're going on a weekend road trip and would like to temporarily mount the bikes on top if possible, but the more i think about it the more i think we'll just have to make space in the back for the bikes.

I've been running this setup for over a year. I think the bars are aluminum. The angle is noticable but not too bad. I can take some pics when I get home. Basically I bungee the rear wheel to the back bar. I routinely have 2 bikes up top on gravel roads. The bars flex but seem pretty solid. I am able to lock the mounts I have with a large padlock. Let me know if you have any questions.
