The difference I see is that he was:
1) not trying to sell anything to anyone on the board
2) not trying to buy anything from anyone on the board
3) not trying to TRADE anything with anyone on the board
Instead, was asking if anyone knew about the existance of a part he's looking for, so a typical response might be "my local shop has one" or "check supergo.com" etc. Another post of this kind might be something like: "Does anyone know if I can get aftermarket chainrings for my M960 cranks, I just don't want to spend the big bucks for shimano replacements. If they exist, can you direct me to a source for them?"
Versus a response to a sell/buy/trade (spam) post might be "you've got PM!" or "what's your email, i've got one."
Too fine a distinction?? I don't know what his response will be, but that's pretty clear to me...of course I don't know what the text of your deleted thread was.
