EX upgrade opinions

Ok I have been wanting to give my bike some upgrades for this coming season. I have a ex-8 2009 model and was wanting to see what others have been happy with. I am looking to possibly get a new set of rims (Mavic crosstrails) and a new braking system possibly shimano XT just want a little more stopping power than the stock juicy 5's.

Any thoughts?

thanks

Both are good upgrades. I really hate Juicy brakes
and have made this same change myself.

I have a 2011 Trek Fuel Ex8, changed out the wheels, Chris King/Stans Arch Rims, changed out the saddle Specialized Toupe, I just dig those saddles, Carbon Seatpost, Carbon Handlebars, Portland Design Grips, and getting ready to change out the drive train to all x9 or XT..not sure which yet...so far I like what I have done to it.
My favorite upgrades were stans 355 hope pro wheels, hope x2 brakes, and carbon handlebar.
Thanks for the replies! I forgot to mention I did upgrade to a fsa carbon handlebar and chunky grips and really love that combo. I put a bash guard on it but have not really had the need for it like I thought so i may upgrade the entire drive train to something nice.
I upgraded the tires (nobby nics), stem (70 mm), bars (710 mm), grips (odi), pedals (dx cl's), cleats (multi release) and seat post (thomson).

Brakes are fine. I can lock them up with one finger. Would like some lighter wheels, but the bontragers actually weigh around 1900 grams together. Cant do much better there for am level wheels. Even for xc wheels, 400 bucks only buys me 300 grams less. I had my lbs do a hub service and check the tension, and im using these wheels till their toast.

A lighter cassette might be a good upgrade in the future for me. Ill save a third of the weight savings on wheels at 20% of the cost.

Really happy with the bike after Sram warranteed an internal rebuild on the rear shock. No more boing boing for me.
Upgraded my black EX8 2009 with Formula ORO K24's in White 183 & 160. Hope pro II black hubs with white DT 4.2 rims and black DT comp spokes. Gold Hope BB, Hope headset, Hope Skewer in the front, Hope seat clamp. Thomson Elite post. Charge spoon in white. Race face lo riser bars. Maxxis Ardent Front & Aspen rear. PRO grips.

Very happy with bike. It was very good in original spec but was sick of the bontrager wheels siezing.:madmax: But now it is very fast. :)

26.8 pounds on scales. :)

Cheers

I noticed the formula brakes are very reasonable priced on ebay how much better are they than stock juicy 5s? I just don't know much about Formula brakes...Definitely going with hope BB for sure!
I had mixed emotions about the Formula brakes when i got them. :madmax: Sticky pistons and annoying disc scrub. :madman: However i invested in a Formula bleed kit and give them a good bleeding. Now they are different class. ;) I've moved them right along the bar so they just line up with my index finger and thats all i need. Very good modulation and feel when you adjust the FCS. Pads are very expensive in the uk. I've just dropped a set of superstar sintered in after the first bleed of 2011 the oither week. Cannot comment on them yet but will try them out this week.

They are alot more powerful than the Juicy 5 with a superb feel compared to the on off feel of the juicys. However they are high maintenance for me. I need to bleed every 2-3 months to keep them in top condition. I must be getting air in from somewhere? I nearly threw the towel in and ordered some Hopes but after a quick bleed i'm back in love with them. Maybe the new RX's are lower maintenance???

Cheers
