I'm surprised there aren't more posts on here from people looking for riding buddies.

I just bought my first MTB and am about ready to go try it out. Would like to go with someone else who is a novice or not into extreme. At this point I'm more into going where there's some great scenery and just having a safe, fun ride. I don't intend to get to the point where I need to buy protective gear and a full-face helmet.

I was actually thinking of taking s trip to the redwoods for a week or two, but that wouldn't be much fun solo. So, if you want to check out some local (or not-so-local) trails, shoot me a message.

Willing to ride almost anywhere: Lower McKenzie Trail, Oakridge, NUT, Crater Lake, the coast, etc.

Sunday would be better for me so I can get prepared Sat., but I could probably make Sat. if necessary.

I'm a 40+ guy in overall good shape, but haven't ridden since last summer (bike path).

MTB Eugene does Monday evening rides on the Ridgeline trail in town. Rides start at 6pm at the bottom of the Headwaters trail (corner of Martin and Canyon). They are open to beginners, but I'll warn you that the Ridgeline trail has a good amount of climbing in it. If you are really out of shape, starting at the Fox Hollow trailhead will be easier. We pass thru the Fox Hollow trailhead around 6:15 to 6:30.

A great spot to ride solo would be the lower 10 miles of McKenxie River tail. It's quite easy and flat and is very scenic with lush forest, huge trees, and a gorgeous river to enjoy along the way.

Thanks cazloco, I received the same suggestion from my Craigslist post, as well as links to the mtbr forums. I'm not really into the group thing though, although I was thinking of hitting the Ridgeline Monday. Has to be someplace "safe" to leave my car, or I won't go. I haven't checked a map yet, but it seems like 40th & Donald might be the closest place to park.

I forgot to say that I can pretty much ride anytime, not just weekends.
I like riding in the evening too (around town anyway, don't know about off-road) - got a good light.

I was hoping to meet people from the Eugene area, so we could split expenses if we drove far.

I'm open for a trip to Tahoe too. I rented a mtb there a few years ago and have been wanting to go back.

I'll try and let you know if my riding buddies and I head somewhere easy and you can hook up with us. Some of us really suck, so you should be able to keep pace unless we're cranking out hill climbs. We're late 20's, but act way less mature than that.

In the meantime, I'd get cracking at some trails and get a feel for what you can and cannot do. Do MRT, Ridgeline and.Middle Fork and get back to us. I'd love to show you a trail or two and help you get the most out of mountain biking.

Good to know I may be able to keep up with riders who suck!

The whole idea behind this post was to meet someone to ride with.
Sure, I could go out alone, but it seems a waste for just me to drive an hour just to go biking.
And the problem with the MRT is:
1. I don't want to ride the top third at this point.
2. Need a way to get to a starting point above if I park below at the ranger station (unless I ride up from there - I'm obviously not familiar with the trail).

I've been too busy to ride so far - today I'm hitting bike shops and REI looking for gear.

MRT: You park at the Ranger Station (pick up a map), access the trail right across the highway, ride up river as far as you want then turn around and ride back. It's flat-ish with some short climbs (both ways), so no need for a shuttle. You'll run into hikers and other bikers, so you don't have to worry about being out in the middle of nowhere on your own...

I met the group for the Ridgeline ride yesterday (my first ride of the year and first mtb ride ever), and was about ready to pass out by the time I got to Fox Hollow. :(

I have no idea where Goodman-Eagle's Rest is, but unless it's all downhill I'm not sure I'm up for it today. Actually, I have to stick around until about 1:45, then I'm free. I haven't slept since the ride yesterday so I gotta crash here pretty quick. Probably not enough time to ride if we left around 2:00, huh?

Thanks for the offer.

RR,

That post was from a week ago. Judging from your commment, you will need lots of miles of climbing to be ready for trails outside of the city. Keep going after the Ridgeline rides, and go out on your own now that you know where it is. The only way to get decent at hills is to ride hills. Your legs and lungs will come along with repeated exposure, and frequency of exposure is a significant part of that equation.
There are no trails around here that are all downhill..
Keep pedalling!
