Does anyone know what the Erie Canal is like? Is it paved or gravel? Would it be muddy right now with all the rain?

I haven't ridden all of the Canal system but I have seen portions of it which are all of the possibilities... Paved, Gravel or hard pack fire road trail.

...I think I was on the erie canal...

I have ridden a small portion of the canal near Green Lakes. I don’t believe that any of it is paved. The area near Green Lakes is very small crushed stone, and doesn’t seem to have been affected by the rain. I’ve been told that as you go towards Rome, that it gets narrower, and the surface is a little different, so it may be muddy out there.

I have seen paved, gravel, hardpack wide enough for a golf cart and somewhat rough singletrack, all along the Erie Canal.
