A friend of mine and I are experimenting with bamboo/hemp joints with the eventual goal of building a bamboo bike. We're so far using West systems slow cure epoxy, which is quite nice stuff, but incredibly runny. Our latest test joint we didn't thicken it, and we then watched an incredible amount of epoxy slowly ooze out of the wrapped test hemp joints after a while. We have a can of 406 Colloidal Silica that we're thinking of using to keep the viscosity under control, I was wondering what you folks have used. I also have a bag of finer hemp fibres that I might try, but I the silica powder will be much easier to mix and more consistent!

I'm quite impressed with how the hemp fibre wants to bind to itself. After a few wraps around the tube, you can really pull it tight, I wasn't expecting that!

The epoxy that's slowly oozing out is just excess. That's what you want to happen when you're wrapping the the joint tightly. Too high of an epoxy/fiber ratio will make a weaker joint.
