Floating the idea at the moment. Carver96er and I have been talking about this for a while as a training ride for the Odyssey. Smiths Gully to Kinglake then down to Steels Ck. via Mt Jerusalem trk - up to Everard trk - Skyline road - back to smiths gully. Expecting around 70km and 1500-1800m vert. More details later. Will have to find out the trail conditions as well. Most importantly, weather is looking cool-ish.

Maybe, though if I have the time I'm thinking of heading up to Buller with Trav to do the cross country tracks and a few runs of the Klingsporn via the Mirimbah shuttle.

How about Castlemaine/Daylesford/Castlemaine via the GDT some time in the next few weeks? 110 km and 2200 m. There's a bit of bitumen involved so you can call it "training" if you like. Or Castlemaine/Bendigo/Castlemaine via the GDT - I'm keen to try that one day, probably about 120 km but not so much singletrack.

Seriously tempted, but daunted by the 70k dist. 40-50 would be nice. I'll be doing the Daylsford-Castlemaine GDT in the next few weeks.

70km is a guess. The ride is basically the Yarra Ridge ride we took you on last year. Added to that is:
- continuing up to Kinglake. The Bundy trk junction where the sign and seats are (now burrnt) is about halfway. The 2nd half is easier if I recall correctly. From there we can descend into the Yarra Valley to Steels creek and climb back up to Everard trk. Pretty sure the gradient of this should be ok as it used to be a road (I think)

Or from Kinglake we can return down Everard trk and do the 'Yarra Ridge' loop as we used to - although 3/4 of the single track is no longer there at this point in time. Meaning much sweat and energy will not be expended. This would be about 50-55km.

Puddleduck, a couple of the guys from the Cog ride are interested, not sure about Carver yet. You are back bright eyed and bushy tailed from NZ - you will smoke us on this ride, surely!:D

MELCHCH, not sure of your riding ability as I've never met, if you think you're up for it come along.

I'm thinking meet at the SMiths Gully store at 8am.

Am thinking that I'll give this one a miss.
Ok. At this point it looks like it will be MELCH, Mr H, Aaron and myself.
For the record I don't know how far it is, how long it will take or how hard it will be. Not a huge amount of singletrack either.
I'll be taking 3L of water plus endura and gels/lotsa food and would reccommend this.
See you at 8am..

Hud,
How was this ride? I would love to get some detailed directions on this ride as I have ridden a few of the sections you mention but not together as a loop. Keen to do something longer than my usual rides up there.
Thanks

If you check the 'What did we all ride on the weekend' thread back a page or two there are some stats/pics of the ride. It was a good ride, more of a training ride than 'awesome fun' but fairly epic with good views etc. Mt Jerusalem trk. has closed signs on it but only because the bridge at the bottom is gone. No issue to walk across the one foot wide creek but for liability issues etc the trail has to be closed (I'm guessing)
Heading out to St A. this sat. early to do a ride on the singletracks if you are interested.

Thanks Hud, but can't seem to open this thread, any ideas?

Worked it out.

Had a look at this thread and saw you were riding Blue Lake tonight. I ride there weekly as it is not even a ten minute ride from my place. Watch out for snakes, I have seen three (ran over one!!) in the last couple of weeks!

Last time I rode Mt Everard track (couple of months ago) I was stopped by ranger/park maintenance guy who told me I shouldn't be riding on the track as it was still "too fragile". Obviously the combined 100kg weight of my bike and me do much more damage than his 2 ton plus Toyota!!! Have you has any dramas around there? Like I said earlier I want to do Everard, Mt Jerusalem, Old Kinglake, Skyline etc pretty soon.

Thanks for the offer for Sat but can't make it. Heading down to the beach with the kids!!!

I've heard of this happening before. I think you click on 'My account' up the top of the page. Then 'Edit options'
Set 'display mode' to 'linear mode'.
I may not have this right but someone will correct me.

Just saw this. In my opinion the fireroad is pretty much back to how it was pre-fires. Rain and time have really sett;led it down.

But to answer your question all the signage is gone off the gates telling you to keep out. (Except Mt Jerusalem trk). There may be a general warning sign about falling limbs but I'm not sure.

The plan at this stage is to do this ride again this saturday - depending mainly on the weather. Meeting at the Smiths Gully Store at 8am.
WILL CONFIRM TOMORROW AFTERNOON-ish

It's a goer!
Shouldn't be too wet, in fact as a whole I doubt there would be a drier ride to be done in Vic after the recent rain.
So we are meeting at the Smiths Gully Store and hope to be rolling by 8am. I'm tipping about 50km and a bunch of climbing. Seeya there!
