Elk Meadow Idlers

1438 Views 16 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  jaycastlerock
A while back the MTBR community helped solve my Green Mountain ******* mystery, explaining that the hee-haws sitting in their vehicles in the parking lot staring out into space are friendly neighborhood CB enthusiasts. I now have a new mystery on my hands...the folks that pull up to the front of the Elk Meadow Stagecoach Blvd parking lot and just sit there idling. I ride at Elk Meadow a couple times a week and I encounter this every single time. It's always a pickup truck or SUV, never anything smaller. They don't seem to be using the park facilities, never pull into the lot to park, and it's always different vehicles. If it didn't happen every time I'm there, I'd just chalk it up to any random reason one might pull over...check directions, bee in the car, etc. But the regularity with which I see these mystery idlers makes me think they're all doing the same thing. So can anyone shed some light?

They're cruising and waiting for these guys.
On their cell phones? "Wait, gotta pull over, here's a spot".

I always appreciate folks pulling over to talk on their cell phone... especially since I ride my road bike on Stagecoach regularly.

Doubt this is the case at that location, but I also see a lot of people idling waiting for their kids to get off the school bus... apparently kids in Evergreen are incapable of walking a few hundred yards from the school bus stop to their home.

Yeah, I noticed this also last year while I was working on vehicle counters. Most of them were carpooling or waiting on someone else to show up, before pulling out and following them. Really weird. Probably a place people are meeting before going to have sex.

Reminds me of last year at Greenland Park. As I got of I-25 and turned off the exit ramp I noticed some blonde sitting in a SUV who stared really hard at me as I passed by. My subi windows have limo tint so you can't see inside.

Anyway I drove to the Greenland trailhead and started changing clothes. Next thing I know a lady cop and that blonde lady are hauling me out of my car, while half-undressed, and questioning me about having sex at the trailhead. Apparently people are meeting on-line and arranging rendezvous at the trailhead. I guess the open trunk with my bike inside wasn't enough of a clue for inspector clueless?

Another story... when I lived in Boston the gay guys would meet at all the rest stops on the toll road I took to work every morning (it was the only place to stop and get breakfast at 4:30 a.m.). When propositioned I would always tell them that "I only eat donuts for breakfast, go away perv". PC what? You know me better than that by now...

Sounds like more fun than band camp.
Doesn't seem like cruisers or drugs since I never see them interact with anyone. They are usually on cell phones and my GF suggested they may be stopping because the lot has good reception. It's possible that cell phone reception is spotty down the road...I never drive further on Stagecoach than that parking lot and they do all seem to be travelling in the same direction.
I got stopped by a lady cop
In my automobile.
She said get out and spead your legs.
And then she tried to cop a feel
So just an update - I did some investigating to test my GF's cell signal theory and so far it holds up; audio was choppy up the hill towards the parking lot and was significantly better at the lot.

But now a disturbing development about the trail itself: Elk Meadow, arguably the most nonthreatening trail on the Front Range...has been SANITIZED!! What little technical features there were have been de-rocked and flattened - most noticeably that one section where you make a left hand turn over some rocks and descend through a narrow notch, then make a quick right to climb back up. The notch is gone! It's just a smooth dirt ramp now! WTF!
Complaining about sanitizing at Elk Meadow is kind of funny... :D
I've had people do it frequently at jump spots. I just sit and stare at them, if they say something I just say " sorry, I was waiting for you to do something". They leave, without fail.
Cell phones for sure. Same thing on HWY103 - we pull over and make/finish our calls before heading up.

True. The bottom loop is more of community path than a real mtb trail anyway. I like the hot moms pushing strollers, so no cares about the little bit of cleanup they've done to make it more inviting. I rode up Too Long and down Bergen Trail today and didn't notice any changes on those.:)

imho, jrmv.
Similar changes will occur as happens after forest fires and a heavy rain in the fire devestated area.

Yea, not to change topic but, i rode deer for the first time in quite a while and saw a long section where the had made such Jeffco run duh "improvements". (NOT moutain biker groups). No rocks or even pebbles in site. Then when it rains real hard and the areas stay extra muddy and they complain about people using the trail in such a delicate state.
So since the natural erosion water/mud barriers of the rocks are gone in a few years enough rain washes that layer of soil/dirt off. Then they have more rocks a layer down ! Yikes, time for more sanitizing. Me see pattern. Then years later complain about how deeply cut the trails are into the mountain side by the bikes.
Btw, notice how much more dust is up on Apex of late ?
I noticed really nice water drains they built that were allready just turning into dips.
Hmmm, need to build water trench/bar, big rock in my hand I was about to throw off trail, Oops; there it goes.....not very good at simple math. :D
Btw, yes I have done trail work before. No I won't do stupid trail work.
oh oh, turned into another front range whining thread ! So now comes the name calling and b*&tching like lil girls. (Oops sorry that's the 29er thread.)
