Hi all,

I'm wondering what my options might be for putting racks on my ECR. Personally, I'm looking for more minimalist racks to support the weight of big saddlebags and such - not to carry panniers. But, if we're talking racks, feel free to add the bigger ones to.

Some online scouring reveals the following racks do work

Tubus Vega - great piece on it, looks too tight for knards though..
Old Man Mountain Sherpa - another detailed piece

Possibles
I've seen references to Nitto (Marks rack) and Bontrager (unnamed) but no positive IDs.

Nitto R-10

I put a Nitto R-10 on my Karate Monkey, and have since moved it over to my Pugsley. I use it to support a Carradice Camper Longflap. It's a really nice minimalist rack. No clearance issues on either bike.

I'm not a fan of the OMM racks. That rear rack sits way out in space...going to load the bike a bit oddly.

Nice Racks sure as hell aren't minimalist, but they're great and the fit very well. I've had the rear version mounted both front and rear, and it works great - solid, level, quiet and has supported a weeks worth of groceries in panniers with a 12 pack bungie netted on top.

Will play around with the Surly Rack today, my experience on the trail is they want to rattle loose so tug nuts and extra tug nuts are a must.

I also did two trips with the Salsa Down Under (HD) but didn't like two things - felt the load was to far forward so it affect handling and for riding on single track with brush the panniers sit so low you have to really be careful to not get "caught in the bushes"

What I have discovered is the Ostrich Rear Saddlebag makes an awesome front handlebar bag on the Jones bars so have been going that route over a front rack

That's a Planet Bike Cascadia 29er. It's too damn small for a 3" tire, but it does alright.

There are two issues with the stock installation - the fender stays are too thin and cause the fender to wobble, and metal arms that join the actual fender to the stays position the upper stay eyebolts in such away that they tend to rub the tire. These problems exasperate each other.

To get firm up and quiet down the fender, I bent the mounts on the fender itself out, and replaced the eyebolts with some 5mm eye bolts from Velo Orange. I replaced the fender stays with 303SS 5mm stock I had, cut and bent in a vice to fit. I joined the new stays to the fork mounts with R clips, again from Velo Orange.

The 5mm stay is vastly stiffer than the roughly 3.5mm stock stay, and the modified connection to the fender itself keeps the eyebolts out of the way.

I still have fantasies of widening the fenders by 20-25mm like a few over our fatter friends have, but I know I don't have the steady hand to do it with a razor or dremel cleanly, and I don't have a band saw.

Thanks man. I do the same thing out back, I just pulled it off to mess with my wheel position a bit. I also added a modified rack stay I had laying around to stiffen up the rear even further, I drilled a few holes in the fender and zip tied the stay on, then bolted the stay to the center cylindrical boss on the rear rack. Rock solid.

Old Man Mountain racks fit front and back very well. Big O Manufacturing makes fenders for the ECR/Krampus. Battery not included.

Another Tubus Vega here and it is a tight fit with Knards on Rabbit Holes. In my case, if wheel was not perfectly true, at max PSI I got minor rubbing with unworn side knobs where the wheel was not true. With a true wheel and/or less pressure the rubbing disappeared. I imagine a narrower wheel may not be quite so tight, but I really like the narrow profile of this rack.

How did you manage to get your 'nice' rear rack level if I may ask? I'm having a hell of a time with the back rack and a medium sized ecr ... my provided struts are just too short!

That raises the stays and brings the rack eyelets closer to the rack, making fit easier compared to the medium frame.

I'd fab longer rack stays out of steel tubing-cut it to length, crush one end in a vice and drill a mounting hole through the crushed faces.you'd probably need to do a bit of grinding to make the crushed end clear the frame, but it'd be an easy enough job.

If you don't mind spending a few dollars, you can get factory-made long rack struts. Nitto ones are available in up to 350mm length. I'm not sure how that compares to the length of the ones you're having trouble with.

I'm not a fan of the stainless steel look anyway. Could make myself some black ones.
