The local Turner importer has an ex-demo med DW 5-spot frame going for about 50% off retail. I am already a bit skint from the crazy Xmas season, but it looks like a great deal :skep:
So, should I trade up from the Faithful old HL 5 Spot? Is the difference really going to be that fantastic for the sort of riding I often do (epic out back all day all mountain type missions)??
Feel free to have a look at my blog for some of the sort of riding I use my current HL 5 Spot for.

Being a frame only I would be swapping all the bits over... which might leave the HL hanging on the wall for a while. I just ordered a new bushing kit for the HL too...moosehead said:Well then MFC! Merry Christmas.
I'm in the process of re-painting my HL Spot in anticipation of new DWL. Only concern at this point, is that the HL will stay in the quiver.
I actually had Charlie discussing buying himself a proper new bike the other day. Talking about suspension at both ends and everything!! :eekster:nickhart said:buy it zane and then tell show charlie what a proper new bike looks like!
Thanks Izyboy, I was just going to go dual ring + bash which will take the chain away from the chain stay... and I currently have an inner tube wrapped on the chainstay, but might look into your "fix" in the near future! :thumbsup:lzyboy said:Hey inzane,
Firstly congrats on the DW Spot purchase! I just read thru the part on your blog about the chain noise when going downhill. I had exactly the same gripe about mine when I first got my DW 5 Spot. I originally, just had the default inner tube wrapped around the chain stay but yes, the amount of noise from the chain slap was rather disconcerting!
What I did to silence I reckon 90% of the chain noise was to get:
- A roll of Self Amalgamating tape, eg. http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4b7252610372f2062742c0a87e010650/Product/View/N1376
- 3mm High Density Foam (or anything else really that will provide some cush)
Cut the foam to a suitable size and zip tie the foam to the bottom face of the chain stay at a couple of places to hold it on. This will just make the taping easier.
Wrap the Self Cling tape on as you would an inner tube. Making sure to stretch it as you go along and overlapping by at least half the width with every turn. Cut off the zip ties as you go along with the tape.
The tape fuses to itself nicely and looks a lot neater than a inner tube with the zip ties!
Not sure if this has been posted before but I'd thought I'd help out since I've been lurking on this forum for so long!![]()
I use the soft side of self adhesive velcro & run in under the chainstay & slightly inside & it works great for noise reduction. Also installed an e-thirteen DRS, now there is zero noise, which is very nice :thumbsup:inzane said:Thanks Izyboy, I was just going to go dual ring + bash which will take the chain away from the chain stay... and I currently have an inner tube wrapped on the chainstay, but might look into your "fix" in the near future!
