I have a new frame coming and have the front dr ready to put on, but every frame I have ever got before had the front dr installed. When clamping it onto the seat tube, has anyone put on something like the clear lizard skins pads to prevent cable rub between the dr clamp and frame or would this just let the dr twist? Do you just 'clamp' the front dr right onto the frame before intalling the cranks (XT Hollowtech) and then make minor adjustments to it's position while routing and adjusting cable??

Some thoughts

I would put the cranks on before you put the f/d on, as you're going to have to move the f/d to align it properly and to get proper clearance over the big ring. As for using something to prevent cable rub, I would put that on after you put on the f/d, primarily for the reason you mentioned.

Cable rub or clamp rub? If you install the fd clamp clean to a clean frame and adjust position without undue friction you'll have minimal problems with the clamp rubbing the finish off on your frame. It's when you grind dirt in that interface between clamp and frame that you'll scratch things up. I wouldn't recommend putting anything in between them like an adhesive patch; when the adhesive breaks down it'll just cause problems.

Thanks....

yeah...I was worried about 'clamp' rub and thinking of preventing it using a 'cable' rub patch...I will make sure both surfaces are clean and install it.....crankset first and then front dr.....thanks!

For some reason when people say "cranks" they assume the chain rings are included and that's not necessarily so. My lx cranks are separate from the chain rings therefore installing the cranks has very little to do with installing the front derailleur.

My question to him is does he have the proper front derailleur orientation(eg: top pull, bottom pull,etc.)?

Thanks....

I got the XT front derailleur shipped with the frame (well, the first time the frame shipped - long story) from the frame manufacturer so I assume the derailleur is the correct one. The cranks on XT Hollotech so when I install the cranks, the rings will be installed as well.....thanks.

I assumed the fd coming would be the correct one in terms of diameter and pull/swing; that didn't seem to be in question.

Now as to whether the rings would be mounted on the crank/spider, who in their right mind would mount the cranks to the bike without the rings installed in this situation? The fd installation requires the rings to be installed to complete adjustments and in any case you'd have to take the cranks off again to install the rings, an unnecessary extra step.

MCF- btw, there are two types of Hollowtech cranks from Shimano and they're very different (designated I and II; the former uses a splined cartridge bb, the latter's bb axle is integral with the left crank and utilizes outboard bearings). Be sure to torque the fd clamp bolt properly to avoid slipping/rubbing.
