Does seem like putting the engine of a 90's vintage Hyundai into a 2020 BMW.......
I never said I wanted to do that with my own 240. So have at it with your car analogies and stuff.
Someone else wants to swap his 240 shimano freehub body for my 370 sram XD that I no longer use.
But before shipping the parts over to him, we would like to make sure it would be compatible.

Analogies are like broken change machines. They don't always make cents.
I have no idea about the freehub. I tried to google it but couldn't find anything conclusive.
I’m looking at this like an inverse Ratchet LN upgrade. I think with the proper ring nut the pawl system should work just fine. The only question is if it will seal correctly?
The 370 has the seal on the freehub and the 240 on the hub itself. I guess you can’t go wrong with two seals!😂
People used 240 freehubs on 370 a couple of years ago before the Ratchet LN was a thing and it sealed fine. Not so sure if it’ll work the other way around though.

I'm one of the guilty parties that does the 3-pawl to ratchet upgrade (thank you old bike shop throwing away "junk" roval hubs...), but I also have never done the reverse 
. The seal can be removed on either the freehub or the hub (I'm actually running one with no seal at the moment), so that shouldn't be an issue.
The rings have the same thread pitch and diameter, same thickness, so it should work. Make sure you use the proper sleeve spacer since the HG and XD have different lengths of them.

It makes sense going from a 3 pawl rival/dt hub (especially if the hub is available cheap/free) to the star ratchet. Misplaced enthusiasm for your 'friend'
He’s got some really nice carbon rims laced to these 240S, now why he won’t get a new freehub body for 60€ it’s beyond me.
I’m not the one who gets the short end of the stick so I don’t try to make sense out of it. Only trying to figure out (at a distance) if it’ll work and apparently it will…
