Dropper Post been bugging me..

1805 Views 17 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Tall BMX'r
There are a number of things on my upgrade list, but the one that currently is bugging me the most is my dropper post. Mechanically the RockShox Reverb works perfect. The problem is it's only 170mm. I've found a tolerable position where it's just barley too short for solid climbing, and a too high for steep downs. With the limited supply of options, I bought a KS Integra 200mm dropper. I don't need much up, but I'll take more down please. Since my Reverb has a hydraulic remote, I have too get a new remote too. Tall dudes need more range....

i found my 150 works fine. at least till i started moving the seat forward. steep sta bikes put the saddle in the knees when dropped. so now i want a longer dropper too.

groan!
210 FTW! (y)

I've got 160mm of drop on my Trail Pistol and that's plenty for me. Gets it to where I pedal from, gets it out of the way when I don't pedal.

It's not often that I want it so low, but there are a handful of trail sections where I'd feel better with the seat as low as it can go.

While more is generally better, I find the benefit tapers off fast past that point, so I really begin to question how it's being used and whether it's really "necessary". IMO, it's not a 1:1 ratio of travel to benefit and other riding aspects may need to be considered if the person is having a tough time on a bike in tech terrain..
This is one of those spots that I want my seat out of the way. I have to put my foot down and do a motocross slide to make this straight down, then hard left to flat. Everyone crashes here, including me. If I'm on my seat I'll go over the bars when I hit the trough. If I'm behind my seat it's hard to put a foot down and slide without sitting on the tire, plus my front tire gets too loose to even control the turn. I want to be low and centered. The 200mm will put my dropper all the way down into my seat tube. I don't get it for a week. Once I ride with it, I will report back. Plus I'll be able to compare it to my RS Reverb.

6'5 here and have been running 185 droppers and just got a 213. Only have a couple of rides on 213, and originally put it on my trail bike. Didn't like it. Swapped it with the 185 I had on my bigger travel bike and now love the 213 on bigger bike. So guess it kind of depends on what kind of bike and what you're riding.

Few months ago had to throw my old spare 160mm dropper on a new frame, and I couldn't get used to it. I wanted more, which is why I got the 213. Made me laugh thinking about the first dropper I bought, which it think was all of 125.

You got to be tall to appreciate the need for a 200+ dropper. Personally I want a 225.

Not all situations require the full drop but some of the really steep tight trails I ride I want a bit more. Currently on 210.

I run 210mm on both bikes. Would probably take a 230mm as I have the room, but I’m fine with what I got.

I’d never turn down more dropper range unless I didn’t need it, on my jump bike I run a lever less 100mm with a qr post clamp.

The newer long range posts are pretty good, they don’t flex much more than a rigid post, they are longer lasting, and they work well. The only penalty is weight.

I installed my new 200mm KS Integra dropper. Because all the rain and mud I haven't been able to try it out on trails, but I took it on a long road ride with hills. The first most noticeable improvement is being able to stand over my seat with both feet on the ground and have a gap between my crotch and the seat. Feels like my old motorcycle. I've never had an XXL or XL mountain bike with a seat able to go that low. Even my hardtails dropped all the way where not that low. I like it!
The second improvement over my RockShox Reverb is the speed of the dropper. The KS is really quick up and down compared to my Reverb. The remote on my Reverb was harder to push in. It felt like a heavy clutch. The KS remote super easy to push in, and stops at pin points accurately. The Reverb would react slow and stop kind of where I wanted it. Never noticed it was an issue till I used something better. It feels like my seat is half the weight, if that makes sense?

Great post! Love to read that I'm not the only one who's 170 post is too short! Fully slammed means level with bar. Part of my issue is my actual seat tube angle on my Evil Wrecker OG (v1) is probably less than 65 degrees, so 170mm of travel on my post results in around 130mm of vertical drop.. I find myself having to unbolt the seat collar and lower the base when in the bike park or dropping into Ahab, and would much prefer the 200-210mm range. I'd love to hear what longer travel posts are working best. Currently on a 170 Reverb, and have had KS post back when 150 was their longest. Also hoping to find a 34.9 dia, but seems like that size is about as popular as the 27.2 diameter on my old Turner Highline hanging on the wall of my woodshop.

Wondering if any of you fine tall folks have tried the Bike Yoke Revive 2.0 Max 34.9 x 213mm seatpost? Looks like the real deal, but around $500 with lever..
I'm trying to avoid any shims and their 34.9 works. Serious travel. with a Reset button!
Works below freezing, which is also needed.
I live at 9600 feet and regularly climb to 12,000 in summer; but also ride in Moab several times a month most of year, which is around 5000 feet lower.. So reliability over massive elevation differences is a must. Thanks for any feedback..

I'm really liking the 200mm KS LEV dropper replacement for my 170mm Reverb. It feels lighter and responds quicker. I'm able to set it at the highest I need for climbing, and stand over my saddle in the lowest without it touching my crouch. When I'm sitting on it in the lowest position with my feet on the ground, both of knees are bent. On the quick switchback berms, I can tuck the saddle under my knee. I wouldn't need it any lower or higher. I'm very happy with it, and I like the action and operation better than my Reverb. I don't know about the temperature limits with the KS LEV.

From an earlier post.
Going to from 185 to 210 made a big difference for me. I'd gladly take another 20 mil.

Awesome post for the tall!
I'll look into the KindShock LEV... my last KS post on one of my Turners lasted 7 years.
FWIW just tested my Reverb action at 10 degrees F and it was a very slow crawl back up..
Bike Yoke post looks sweet, but a hefty pricetag.

Another random fun fact for the tall: addidas.com still has size 15 FiveTen Impacts and FreeRiders in stock!
I looked for a long time for 14.5 US (49 EU) in a flat. Couldn't find anything. Finally found a GIRO Riddance in a 14.5 US. They have been great. Feel a little more like a boot than a shoe, but they pedal great. Plus I can kick rocks with them:) They have them in a 15 US (50 EU) as well.
