Drilling rim for stans

Is it really that necessary to drill the rim for the stans rim strips. My LBS has put quite a few rim strips on and says he never drills out the rim. I not too inclined to drill it out, but I know stans site suggest it, or actually says it IS part of the installation process. I know a lot of you guys use stans so whats the word?

It's not completely necessary but will allow the strip to sit a little lower at the valve which helps with inflation. Without drilling there can be a bit of a bump which will elevate the tire beads near the valve.

If you have a good fitting tire and enough air flow, the bump will not be an issue.
MIke B, if it matters I will be using a dt swiss 5.1 d rim and conti Mountain king tires. So it sounds like if you use a wider rim, like the 5.1, it is not as necessary.

(Thanks for the quick reply by the way!)
I only drilled through the first "wall", per the video, not all the way through.

Yes that is what I am talking about, only driling the first wall.
