Don't know XC stuff - Need opinions on 2 bikes

I would lean towards the GT...

If he's looking for a good FS XC bike, he should also check out the Jamis Dakar or Dakar Sport. The Dakar Sport is well designed and comes with Disc Brakes for $800. Also, check out the Ironhorse Hollowpoint. IIRC, there is one that is not too much more than these other bikes.

Your buddy might also look at a used Specialized FSR. They are in the 700-900 range on ebay. I been beating on mine for almost two years and have just had to replace the chain, tubes and tires. (considering I'm about 185-190 lbs and not exactly a "finess" rider they are pretty durable for the money)

Jamis...

Look at the Jamis or even a Giant NRS3.

Out of the two you mentioned, the GT.
