There are a few family members and some almost family who have asked me to keep an eye out for a good bike for them since they know I`m a terrible Craigslist junkie. That`s fine by me- it makes the window shopping more interresting if I think there`s actually a chance I might pick up one of the critters I see, even if I don`t get to keep it. Anyway, I caught a brand new add in the wee hours of the morning (I work nights) that sounded like it might just be a winner for my wife`s boss. An older Stumpy that looked pretty good in the pic, but the only info it really gave was that it was 18 speed. Fifty bucks. After work, I twiddled my thumbs for a few and at eight I figured it was late enough- if there was nothing wrong with the bike, I had a feeling it wouldn`t last even a day before somebody snagged it up.

The guy was already awake and he gave me directions so I went to go check it out. Dang! The thing was a beauty! XT from top to bottom, nice paint, and all original as far as I could tell. I couldn`t pass it up. Now that it`s home and had a much needed bath, all I can think about is dressing it up with a set of Big Apples, replacing the chain and cables and KEEPING IT FOR MYSELF! I`ve never had a bike with a U-brake before. Or indexed thumbies either- didn`t even know that they had a friction mode. Learn something new every day. Ah, man- I dunno if I can convince my wife, but I`m gonna try. Check it out and if anybody knows what year it might be, please give a shout. My vague guess is about a 90. If it were a few years earlier and lugged, there would be no dilema :D

WOW! Yeah, I would have a really hard time giving that up myself. That is a beautiful, old bike. I'm usually not into bright colors, but I love that paint job. I guess try talking your wife into letting you keep it? If you can't, at least you know it's probably going to end up in good hands with a friend or relative.

Convince the wife, buy flowers, take her out to dinner, that's a keeper. You'll appreciate the bike more than your boss will. Good find.

I think it`s an 88. I googled around a bit and found this one:
http://www.twistcomm.com/Bikes/Stumpjumper/Stumpjumper1.html
His is pretty souped up, but the same paint and most of the components. Looks like in 89 they went to rear cantis. I had thought they were lugged pretty much all the way through the 80s, but I guess it was only for a few years.

My wife says "No problem- if you want to trade for one of the other bikes you can keep it". As much as I like the bike, to be quite honest, I have very little use (or space) for it and my original plan makes the most sense. It`s a lot of bike for DelRay, but I`m sure she`ll dig it and I`ll be sure she understands exactly what it is and that she should tell anybody offering to buy pieces of it to take a hike. She`s comming out tonight to take a look and check fit (should fit fine).
EDIT: Oh yeah- check out some of the other bikes on that site I linked to. I hadn`t run into it before last night, but it`s a cool colection.

Well that's mighty nice of you to give up the Stumpy. With finds like that, I wish I had you shopping CL for me. :p

Thanks for pointing out the twistcomm site, cool pics, specially the retros. He even had a Pogliaghi.

Nice find.

Yep, reminds me of my first mountian bike that I got in '88, except mine was a Novara. SIS and U-Brake. Actually, I hated the rear brake; it was always getting crapped up with slime and muddy gunk, but I do miss the simplicity of SIS shifters sometimes.

My second bike was a '90 Diamond Back Ascent EX that I upgraded all of the components to Deore XT (Rapidfires). I rode that bike up until last year.
