The other day I noticed that it seem like the end of my through-axle on my Fox 36 160 was sticking out more than it used to when I thread it on and tighten it. It seems like used to protrude a tiny bit and now it seems like a lot more. I’ve never really paid close attention to this before but it just doesn’t look right. The only thing I can think of that could cause this is stripped threads but the threads look fine on inspection and everything feels stable and tight. It is possible that I am just misremembering and has always been like this.

The kicker is that of course I’m getting ready to leave on a riding trip so would be really bummed if this is a situation where it is not a good idea to ride it like this.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

PS - if anybody is wondering what that weird looking cruddy stuff is I will often put mastic tape over easily scratched areas just to protect them a bit and it is just starting to get really worn down

Are you missing a hub endcap? Those threads seems over exposed to me too. Is you're fork harsher? If it is, then maybe you are missing and endcap, but still being able to tighten down the thru axle will have your lowers out of parallel as they are "squished" together.

Geez - hope I haven't been riding with a missing endcap - I would hope that is something I would notice! The fork feels fine and I would think that my rotors wouldn't even come close to lining up if that was the case, right? - but the rotors are perfect with not even any rub - I'll check that again just to make sure something didn't come off the hubs though thanks

I personally don't really care all that much how it looks (you can obviously tell that from the pic) - but what I do care about is it getting all scratched and scuffed to hell for if I ever want to sell it - it works pretty well - do you also give sarcastic eyerolls to people who put chain guards, crank boots, and frame protection on? (cause I do that as well so I will just go ahead and administer myself a preemptive eyeroll )

Sorry to give you a friendly bump of the ol' elbow, my friend. Had we been at the bar together, we would have chuckled together over my comment while I bought you another beer. Guess I should have used a smiley instead of an eyeroll.

Rotor would still be aligned if it was the non-rotor side end cap that was missing. Your fork would probably still operate, but just be more stictiony-er-ish.

Interestingly, I went and had a look at my partner's 34 to see what the axle looked like.
Very similar. As far as I know there were never any endcaps.
Sorry quite dark in the garage. Couldn't be bothered getting my camera out.

When you put the wheel in, do the end caps scrape the dropouts nicely, or is there a gap?
Yeah good point - it lightly scrapes the dropouts as always and does not leave a gap that has to be squeezed together when tightening

I also got a mm measuring tape out just to make sure and while it's difficult to get a really accurate measurement, it looks pretty darn close to 110mm so I think my hub spacing is good
