hey peeps.

well after a race on the weekend and checking out my 5th after a few rides it seems the blue begin stroke hex screw has some oil on it. i cleaned it up and went for another decent ride and when u rub your finger on the screw there is some (not heaps) of oil on it. rebuild time, or is it just another 5th element quirk i have to deal with?

At this point the 5th Element has moved past the point of having any quirks. It is a good shock and it can be rebuilt as there are a few companies offering the service, but if you have the means to purchase a newer shock, I would. The available technology has moved past where the 5th was/is and the rebuilds and tuning available for the new technology of shocks is fantastic right now. Fox, Manitou, Rock Shox and Cane Creek all offer good shocks ranging from low cost to scary cost. It just depends on how much coin you wanna drop.

I'd contact Kyle at www.thebrokenbike.com for a rebuild/shim kit conversion. I installed one of his shim kits for a 5th element coil on my Bullit and it was a huge improvement over the CVT valve. It wasn't too expensive and the turnaround was about a week. The shock was very active and I'm very happy with it. I would put it on par with a Fox Vanilla RC for performance.
