I am over the choc. milk thing. Looking for something new that you all suggest.

I am considering the Endurox R4.

I mix up some perpetuum sometimes after a ride. A banana or whatever is probably just as good though. Main thing I hear is to eat/drink ASAP after your ride, that you absorb carbs best within the first 20 minutes post ride.
i love endrox R4, I've been using it almost exclusively this entire season.
I use R4. Normally I don't care for fruit punch flavored drinks but a really cold fruit punch flavored R4 really hits the spot immediately after a hard ride for me.

Tried Hammer Recoverite but it just did not have enough flavor/sweetness for post ride
Its important to get water back into your body after an event.
I go for a quart most of the time, but after that, its almost always a beer.
Good beer, nothing in a can.
I'd suggest Stone Arrogant Bastard.
+1 on the beer. I drink a lot of water
when I ride. So after the ride I hit the
shower, then have a couple of beers.
When I ride the thought of that beer
really gets me going.

I thought the same until I tried adding a scoop of HEED (and Endurolytes for good measure). Makes it go down a lot easier, and if you read the Hammer info on "replinish, not replace", it makes sense to help get carbs/electolytes back in your system ASAP. Hammer uses a lower ratio of carbs/protein than Endurox anyway, so adding some back into the mix shouldn't hurt anything.

I've used R4 and liked it, but vastly prefer HEED to Accelerade, so I just stick with the Hammer products now.
Find something that your body will digest quickly as well as both replenish your glycogen stores and get your body protein needed to repair damaged muscle tissue. I have been using the recipe out or the book “The Paleo Diet for Athletes" for a year and a half now and was amazed how much more quickly I recovered from hard effort.

My current post workout nutrition is as follows:
12floz of apple juice
1/2 frozen banana
30 grams whey protein
Blended together in a shake.

1/4 cup of raisins

If I am on the road I just eat the banana and mix the apple juice and protein in a shaker cup.

I suppose I could elaborate. During my full time racing days (that is to say I was on a team and rode all the f*ucking time) our coach was one hard core motha' and had rules and guidelines for just about everything we did. The one anomalous item he allowed was two beers after we rehydrated after a race. He didn't drink, and didn't want us drinking the week prior to a race (so, pretty much never.)
But we didn't have 'recovery' drinks back then anyway.....
I've only used recovery drinks that I've received as free samples. I find them to be an expensive waste of money. Picking on Hammer as an example, a single serving of Recoverite packs 170 calories at $2.80 per serving. A short training ride for me recorded with my powertap would be around 1000 kcals (1000kj of work at assumed ~25% metabolic efficiency). The single serving barely makes a dent in the energy expenditure from even a short ride. Real food is way cheaper and IMHO probably better for you.
I have purchased the weight gainer stuff used by body builders in the past, which sells for something like $0.10 per 100 calories, and has more or less the same ingredients as the overpriced crap marketed to endurance athletes. I quit using it after learning that the supplement industry is basically unregulated.

Within 15 minutes of finishing I will have some coke or some more of my HEED drink that i use for racing, and then try to get some decent food (carbs) in me within the hour after finishing. Screw the recovery drinks, real food does a better job in my opinon.
i use both. recoverite immediately after to hold me over until i cook a meal which is usually consumed within an hour or two post ride.
Endurox R4 for me. Stuff really works. Although for some strange reason it makes makes your water bottles smell like barf. Weird.
Just purchased Powerbar Recovery w/ gift card

Any thoughts or experiences with this product??? It only has 3 grams of protein, where most other have around 10 grams it seems. I wonder if it really even matters:confused:

I usually try to get a 4:1 carb to protein mix. To the OP I take 2-4 scoops of endurox r4 after a ride.
Endurox here...I've used a few products in the past, and even my own blend of carbs and whey protein, but Endurox has proven better than anything for me. "Liquid calories" are far easier to digest and get to your system faster than solid food, but having a good meal within an hour is very important.
I like First Endurance Ultragen. Today I did a pretty easy 2 hour ride, though, and made myself a banana/honey/almond butter sandwich since I've got bread to use up :)
I'd stick with the chocolate milk. I'm lucky in that it seems that whatever recovery drink I use seems to work for me so long as I actually drink it in time. But the stuff is expensive and there are some real concerns about the manufacturing process for many of them and what is really getting into the product. My wife and kids love chocolate milk so it is always around the house.
Did a ton of research when training for a marathon and Endurox came up everywhere. It's really got the right ratio of protein and carbs that your body is craving after a training ride or race. You'll recover faster than just drinking water or an energy drink. Believe the hype, it's good.
miss rides a lot said:

+1 for Ultragen
