On road wheels, it's pretty common to need a RD/cable tension adjustment when swapping rear wheels (of different mfrs). Shimming a cassette is a quick fix to make them better align, if swapping is going to be common.

How common is this in the MTB world with discs, XD drivers, and thru axles?

Are any mfrs better or worse about this?

If you stick with one brand of hubs like Shimano or DT Swiss (and the same brand and model of rotors and cassettes on all wheels), they are usually bang on when swapping wheels, but as soon as you mix brands or mix cassette and rotors between wheels, all bets are off.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. My + wheelset needs a new hub. My other set of wheels are DT350 based. A DT 350 + upgraded ratchet is a lot more expensive than a Hope Pro 4. I don't really want to mess with alignment issues when swapping.

Some time ago I saw on Germans online shops rear DT 350 hubs already with the upgraded ratchet, at the time the price was 159€.
