um, a fox fork is not a good idea to look at. They're fine forks (I think there is a problem with the stock seal though, but easily fixable) but you could spend $700 on a stock fox fork or $550 on a top of the line DJ fork in your choice of 65mm, 80mm or 100mm from brad @ nemesis project. Or even $270 on a new stock manitou stance static, which is the best deal you're going to find. A little heavy this year, though!

Or you could get a used 2003 DJ2 for like 100 bucks and adjust it to 100mm to fit your stp. I swear, you're not going to find a better QR fork for the money nowadays. People will say the stance QR is so much better, and that the Gold label 1 is WAYY much better, but the air valve adjustability is awesome. and nobody wants theirs anymore so you can find em CHEAP! I have one, so I can vouch. They're sure not flashy or shiny though . . .

And you can find plenty of other stuff in between . . .

if you want to gain speed going backwards I suggest a hill . . .

I'm not sure what a freewheel is, but it has something to do with the cog being able to rotate without the axle I think . ..

what rear singlespeed thing are you talking about?

If you have a QR axle, which I think you do, I'd recomend:

Gold label 1. Probably the best all around stock QR fork on the market (price, dampening, weight, looks, etc.), if you want to go new. Although, there seems to be a tendency with the arches to break.

OR

Used 2003 DJ 2. I love mine for what it is (a QR fork). But make sure it gets modded to 110 or 100mm. You'll love the adjustability (stick on a shock pump and go as firm as it can handle, which is practically rigid, or let as much air out of it as you want and ride around your crown touching your lowers), the weight, and barely noticable weight difference in your wallet.

If you somehow have a 20 mm thru axle,

If you want the best, a custom nemesis project fork is the way to go. But keep it atleast 80mm, because the stp is meant for a 100mm fork. Your wallet may not thank you though, but you will.

argyles are very nice too.

04-05 are the worst years as far as weight goes. But those things are frickin' TANKS.
Pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Older Italian-made Marzocchi forks are built to last though. I don't think I've ever seen a Marzocchi DJ blowup beyond repair.

The Manitou Gold Label is a great fork as well. A good pound and a half lighter than an older DJ2. Might wanna look into that. (Don't let these groms tell you "only buy Marzocchi & RockShox"...)

I've seen plenty of cracked M-arches and dropouts. I even saw one where the crown cracked clean off in two placed. The steer tube and the stanchions were completely seperate.
