I am looking for a beginners mountain bike that will last and be upgradeable. Within my price range, I've narrowed it down to either a Diamondback Topanga or a Specialized Rockhopper. The Rockhopper will run me $50 more, which I'm willing to pay, but I was wondering what you guys recommend. As a beginner, will I even be able to tell the difference between the two bikes?

Rockhopper

I have no experience with the Diamondback but I own and ride a Rockhopper. It's a great bike. It was my first bike serious bike I bought last summer and I've upgraded basically everything on it - so it's fully upgradeable, and worth doing so as you learn more about riding and bike components.

Basically you can't go wrong with the Rockhopper. Maybe the same holds true for the Diamondback as well, I'm not sure.
