Dia-compe Headset Question

1214 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Bikinfoolferlife
I just rec'd a TREK 970 (It was built in 1996). It has a dia-compe aheadset. Can anyone tell me if this headset is "threaded" or "threadless"? I know I can find out by taking it apart but that's not something I can do at this time. It came with Rocksox Judy XC"s.

Thanking you in advance.

Threadless. The original threadless headset in fact (though released years earlier than yours).
now, was that the one that, instead of the headtube having a star nut to snug it down, the headset had some kinda wedge that tightened down as you tightened the allen screw? i seem to recall having an old marin with a dia-comp headset like that. never really liked or trusted it.
woops, just to clarify, i meant star nut in steer tube

It's the star nut. Another member has informed me that it's a "threadless" headset. Thanks....

Thanks Shiggy....
It was called an Aheadset to differentiate it from threaded headsets, became a sort of generic name for threadless headsets for a while after it came out...
