It been three two months now that I have been riding my ETSX-90. I love the ride but I am having some really huge problems with the drivetrain.
Three weeks ago I did an endo and noticed that I was getting some ghost shifting afterwards. Did some adjustements and things went better. An hour later I stopped to for a quick break and after starting again I managed to get 10 feet before the derailleur went into the wheel. The derailleur hanger was bent, the cage of the derailleur was toast. Looking at the chain it was about to go off the large cog on the cassette but not quite. The dreailleur cage was in the spokes, the chain was super tight. So tight that it was impossible to move anything or take the wheel off. I took it to my shop and they say that the derailleur hanger must have gotten hit and shifting onto the large cog put it into the wheel. Ok, new hanger, new derailleur.
Last week I did a 73k race and things were perfect. It shifted like butter, super. A couple of day ago, after a good washing and post race inspection,I went off on my weekly night ride with my club. A good 10k of riding with super fine shifting again. then it happenned. I climbed to the top of a hill in the middle gear in the front and the large cog in the back. No problems at all. Got to the top of the hill and we decide to turn left instead of right. I got off and turned the bike around, got back on and pedaled 10 feet before the derailleur got sucked into the spokes again. Same senario as last time. No hits, no branches.
Any ideason how this coul be happening??

first thing to check is that your chain is long enough, especially upon suspension compression. are you running a long cage derailler?

It shouldn't happen in middle ring + big ring in back combo, but it might be.

The ETSX is a frameset built up with dual XT's and rapidrise. My mechanic insisted on putting on a shortcage and I have been trying to tell him that this may be the cause of the problem. He denies it but is replacing it with a long cage anyway, at his expense. Even though I am still not convinced that the problem was from a hit, I am replacing the Rocky deraileur hanger with one from North Shore Billet. I am also installing a hanger banger from them. If this does not solve the problem.............well!
I have been riding for the past 10 years in some pretty rocky terrain that tends to have a lot of branches lying around.The last five years I have ridden a Specialized FSR, I have been racing marathons for the last three years. The Spec still has the origional hanger and derailleur. The Rocky has gone through two hangers and two deraileurs in the past three weeks :madmax:

Be sure to check the hanger alignment. Even new hangers can be off.

Double check the limit screws, too.
