I know a guy who put 5 cogs on his SS rear hub to make a “mini cassette“ along with a RD and shifter and then claimed it had 5 single speeds.

or

fully single speed?

i rode with a guy in moab the early 90's. factory team wrench. strong AF, and also pretty salty.

he had 8 cogs, a rear der, shifter, etc...

but all 8 cogs were the same exact 17t.

he'd shift like crazy, all the time, while putting the wood to the group.

it was awesome.

My father was a squirrel. Maybe that’s why you’re seeing the similarities.

Double Bonus Points for the thread title.

By some definitions above all my bikes are SS. Even the ones with derailleurs. Why? Because instead of shifting down on a steep climb I often stand up on my full suspension bikes. In other words I ride all my bikes like their a onespeed, I just have cadence options on the geared ones.

Ah, some of those posers claim they're SS, but they carry like 3 different cogs in case it gets uncomfortable.

I carry all my extra cogs on a thing called a cassette.

So yeah... only 1 gear at a time.
