OK...so the title of this thread might be a little misleading. MTBBill, Bill O, Rich, and myself rode the desert classic (Palm Springs) on saturday. I had heard many tales of how epic this ride is, and it certainly did deliver.

There is one caveat, however. A 3.5 mile stretch of deep sand awaits you at the mid way point. I have read other accounts and seen the pictures of this heinous sandwash from Hell. I can assure you that the mind numbing length of it made me want to slit my wrists at times. Fortunetly, there was enough residual moisture in it, that the majority of it was rideable. I was told that this is rarely the case. Even though I was barely moving, in my granny gear, and weaving like a drunken sailor...I still felt that staying on the pedals was the lesser of two evils, rather than trudging through the sand on foot.

On with the pics.

Round 3

Here's where the Death March began. I want to say we're about 15 miles in. Approx midway in the ride.

There would be a killer payoff after slogging through that sandpit from hell. More pics to come.

Ah, yes. The Slog Of Doom™. Be very grateful it wasn't inferno hot while you were slogging your merry way up that wash.

miles

PS Where was my invite? I wouldn't have been able to go, but it would have been nice to be asked...

At the top of this last climb, we were rewarded with a killer view of Palm Springs below.

We had just completed close to 30 miles and daylight was waning. The series of switchbacks from this last summit was the big payoff. MTBBill did some helmet camming - Can't wait to see it!

Fin.

PS Not one flat or mechanical the whole ride!

There were a couple of things that ruffled my feathers on this ride. The descent off the meadow on the Indian Poterro Trails has been heavily sanitized and the final bit of singletrack going down by the water tanks in the Goat Trails has also been sanitized with a bunch of cheater rocks below the drops.

I don’t suspect this is the case, but if this “trailwork” was officially sanctioned then those people should be ashamed of themselves. Most likely this is caused by riders whose skill levels are less than their ego levels. If you can not ride this stuff — WALK IT! - DON’T MODIFY OR DESTORY IT! You do not get credit for “cleaning” the trail if you had to dumb it down to do so. If you want to be a better rider, try, try and try again until you either get it or have to walk it. The Goat Trail section really pisses me off because it is a totally optional trail. If you can’t ride it, take the fireroad down. If you want to do trailwork then get with your local Mountain Biking advocacy group for a legititmate trailwork day.

Here is a bit more blurbage and pics from the ride.

Nice report. That's one of my favorite rides in So Cal. Hopefully you guys beat the wind. The last time we descended Hahn we were nearly blown off the mountain. I need to check out the Goat Trails to finish the ride. Too bad I'll never get to see what they were like before the sanitization. Normally I've done the Cindy Whitehead trail.

With the rain this coming weekend the wash should be in good shape again. I think I smell another trip in the making.
