Just be careful---always the links have been safe enough-just have to make sure the SOs don't catch me----I only run Norton Corporate at home and w/no firewall or adwatcher. Anyway to make a long story short i visited the "exoticvacations" link----and immediately my desktop was hijacked for a pharmacy, a dating, and an adult service. Not to mention popup hell started.

After a few hours of research I ran adaware p.e., installed and ran MS antispyware beta, turned on MSN's premium firewall, deleted a bunch of crap from the registry (yes thank the lord everything still works), and rebooted in safe mode and deleted popuper.exe and several other executibles out of the sys32 folder. Rebooted back normally and had to reinstall my external audigy driver.

Everything is fine now--and yes it took all these steps to get rid of the cr*p.

Probably will be hesitant to visit "DC" website anytime soon. The hell us who worship the fairer form must endure

But since I'm already running 2 firewalls, 3 anti-spyware progs and a virus scanner, I'll probably never hafta learn it myself.

I had the same thing happen, while running Norton AV and Internet Security, I have the XP firewall off. First thing I noticed was the home page hijack, and when rebooted IE would launch and go to some spam search site. I downloaded ad-aware and Spybot but finally ended up having to use the "go back" feature to return to a save point a few days earlier to completly fix it.

I emailed Big Jonny and complained but didn't get a response.

You really cant protect yourself enough. It might also be dangerous stating what you have installed here on MTBR...

U mean firefox? Firefox can stop all those pop-ups. But if you're on the internet you're begging to be hacked w/o a tight firewall.

beleive me i probably have to much crud on here but so far everythings peachie.

I did hear about this software kinda like adware and such that warns you when people are pinging your DSL connection and allows you to see who is doing the pinging.

The microsoft firewall is pretty much worthless. Download Zone Alarm from Zone Labs; it's free. Also, if you stick with IE, you might want to download a program called "Proxomitron", also free. You can google it and read about it to see if you want to use it. I've been using it for a few years now and love it. Lately I've been using Firefox, so I don't all the protection of the Proxomitron, but it's still there. Basically it prevents popups, replaces ads with a link, freezes blinking banners, prevents resizing, top of window frames etc. Basically, whatever you want to tell it to do; it's fully customizable.

As a DoD employee, you obviously get Norton with the updates. Add Zone Alarm and the Proxomitron and you'll be pretty safe. I find very little adware on my system (ad-aware and the new MS anti-spyware for that) with this setup. And, Zone Alarm does alert me - unlike the MS firewall - anytime something new tries to access the net from my machine. Popups, home page hijacks, desktop hijacks and all of that crap are non-existent. Give them a try.

I too, surf the... am, dark side of the net now and then and with this set up, I don't get any of the attendent garbage that goes along with it.

The MS stuff I used was the antispyware---but the firewall is Mcaffee Personal Firewall Plus---it is provided free w/ MSN Premium. It notifies me too. Yeah I haven't had any more trouble since I made these moves. Proxomitron sounds like it might be worth checkking out and when I find time I will.

From the source I use, looks like the McAfee is a good firewall. (http://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm) Here's a series of pages that describe various firewalls and includes a free utility to see if your firewall is effective at not just stealthing your computer, but at catching outgoing crap - most worrisome in my opinion.

You can also look for the ShieldsUp page at grc.com to actually have them probe your system and see what's visible on the net. I've found the advice there to be very helpful.

I apologize for the issues caused by a link I ran off my site, drunkcyclist.com, on April 24. I was emailed about it on the 27th, but was out of town and did not get the email till last night. Let me assure you the DC website does not spread spyware and the rest of that lame junk. My server is clean and my intent clear: I tell funny stories and link porn.

Regardless, I pulled the link to the "erotic retreat" as soon as I heard about the issue.

There have been links to outside sites that have caused problems. I regret when this happens, and I check each link before I run it on the site. That said, my machines are running Mozilla Firefox, and I do not see the issues IE users experience. I run a variety of software to keep the penis clean, so to speak, and I would recommend you download a free version of Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE.

I got it too last week

I clicked on a link from fark.com and got hijacked. called "trojan.desktophijack"

Had all the same things happen as ArmySlowRdr did. popup hell, changed a bunch of registry settings, etc.

I got this while running XP sp2, Norton corporate edition, Zone alarm, m.s.antispyware, and Mozilla firefox...all up to date.

I followed the symantec security response fix...deleted all the registry files, ran scans in safe mode, etc. but I still can not get all my display properties, (right clicking on the destkop, properties) it only shows 2 tabs now.

This is a bad one, I don't recommend getting it.
