Custom Hangers?

769 Views 17 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  .thumper.
Does anyone know where I can get a custom Der Hanger made? I broke mine at the sk8 park a while back and have been running singlespeed but I kinda want to get some gears back on it. The frame I believe is a 10-10 P. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

try here. if he doesn't have anything in stock that might work, he'd probably be able to get the closest thing to it, and either he or you could modify it to fit.

no problem. looks like he's got a ton available. should have something that you can make work.

i'm looking at here for a Hanger Banger for my Bullit clone, and the Flip Flaps for my Z-150 on it. they might have a hanger to work for you as well.

[Fatherly voice] Do not buy a hanger that is stonger than the factory hanger. If you do and you crash, instead of the hanger failing (cheap & easy to fix) you will transfer all that hate to the dropout itself (not cheap & easy to fix). Buy a few spare factory replacement hangers and keep them in your camelback, sock, fup, whatever. :)

mey, if i could.... (sorry Hook, for derailing your thread)

my hardtail is steel, and isn't replaceable. this is my idea for my squishy, which supergo has been out of replacements for forever.......

it replaces the whole drive side dropout assembly. i doubt i'll f#$k it up, but i'd like to get a spare (or two) from them as soon as possible. they are no longer going to be making/selling the weyless housebrand frames. so if i break mine, i'm not sure what they'll do. i've heard great things of their coverage on these frames, so they'd likely offer me something from whatever frames they sell at the time.

I understand. Steel bends and can be bent back, so generally no biggy unless you smoke it hard. What I was refering to was 2-piece aluminum dropouts where the hanger screws to the dropout itself. I thought the Weyless was a Bullit clone? How can the entire dropout be replaced unless it has an FSR rear end (dropout pivots at chain & seatstays)? Now you've got me curious!

follow the supergo link; it shows the dropout assembly replacement bit.

i *hope* to never have a problem, but still want to get a spare one or two from them just in case. if not, and it dies, then their warrantee folks will have to deal with my full 140# of wrath. ;) the bolts just tighten it up, it would actually stay on with the wheel secured in. not that i'd want to ride it that way........ seems very beefy for what it is.

i've had to tweak a few steel hangers in the past, but never had one so messed up that it wasn't still viable. then, i'd just have a handy dandy local framebuilder throw on a new one!

Duh! OK, got it. Next time type slower so I can follow along.

Just don't ride with Josh and you should be fine. I recall you tacoed your GF's wheel at Palmer on the same ride my hanger blew up. Wasn't but a few weeks later my 10-year-old crank busted in half. The only common denominator was Josh. Coincidence? I think not.

nah, that was my own fault for swiping the wheel of her bike to use that day. was waiting on my new wheels from larry, and hers had the right size rotor and cassette already attached; just had to swap tires........

larry built wheels for me from now on, i swear.

meh, i've ridden with josh since then without problems.......

Yeah - look what Josh did to my front wheel last time in GJ...

I just got and installed the Hanger Banger and it seems like it's going to be sick. I am on my third hanger so I took a friends advice and got one. I understand the concept of having the derailleur hanger be weaker than the frame so you don't damage the frame but my problem is that one good whack and it becomes like taffy. I have been told that the hanger banger is design to prevent this and also if you hit the derailleur hard enough the hanger will still break before the frame gets damaged. I'll post after I have had a chance to ride it for a little while to let you guys know how it works.

Awesome. I've been looking for something like this (Hanger Banger). Post some pics of it in a new thread when you get a chance. I may have to try one out as well. What version do you have (Deore, XT/XTR, SRAM)? Where did you get it (johnhenrybikes.com?). It looks similar to the Specialized one for the Demo and new Enduros. Did you need to get a longer skewer?

your regular skewer should work; the non-lever end threads into this, and the QR lever part would obviously be on the disc side. i'm thinking, for those of us without through axle frames/hubs......

pair this with one of the steel 5mm allen bolt non-QR skewers to get a much stiffer rear end than a normal QR setup. i'm wanting to do this with my squish bike, and davetoo wants one for his GT that seems to continuously eat hangers.

john henry's was where i've looked at. the guy who runs www.derailleurhanger.com said he was trying to get some in the states. but that was over a month ago; he may have some now.

Well, since I have no patience and tend to eat derailleurs, I just ordered one from John Henry for my BigHit (SRAM). I'm guessing the prices listed on that site are in Canadian dollars, but I'm not sure, so I don't really know how much I will be paying for it.
