Custom apocalypse bikes?

Hi folks,

I'm hoping you can help me locate a frame builder and some unique bikes. I think I saw the bikes first on Radavist, but I can't be sure. The bikes are very special, so there might be a chance somebody here has a name or link...

This is what I remember:

1-Strange, unique bikes, made from steel, entirely custom, mountain or randonee style, with features like varying wheel size, ovesize tires, front and rear wheels that can be exchanged, complicated racks and hauling systems, and so on.

2-There was a page or link of story describing three or four of these creations.

3-They were made by one builder.

4-I think the builder was based somewhere in California...I want to say near Santa Cruz but I'm not sure.

Does that ring any bells?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

All the best,

Bruno

Is "apocalypse bike" a category of bike? That term is new to me.
@ Dr. Welby--I've seen those bikes! But that;s not the builder I had in mind. The bikes this builder makes....they're relaly well crafted, custom machining, high quality fabrication, and so on.

@ Nat....I just made that up! But I think I read it in the article about these bikes...something like..."These bikes would survive the apocalypse."

Nice term, though :)
Maybe https://bikepacking.com/plog/inside-hunter-cycles/ then?

Rick’s take: Modern old school MTB, rigid only, pure business with an end of the world apocalyptic durability and adaptability tinge. Also collapsable for jumping out of helicopters and storing in submarines.
That was it!!!! You found it!!! It's not quite as I remember, but cool nonetheless.

I keep a library/list of cool/different frame builders, and this was a missing link, so thanks again!

In return, I can cut-and-paste this list from an email I sent to a old friend and companion from the "bike days" of our youth. Lot's of great stuff there!

"Apocalypse bike" = "Torncountry?" "Deadcountry?"

Anyway, speaking of apocalypses, I found it baffling that it took ten seasons of The Walking Dead for them to finally realize the utility of bicycles.

"Deadcountry" -- Why do I picture a dystopian future where I'm in the middle of a desert that used to be corn and wheat fields, trading the last fresh apple on earth for a 26" tube?

sounds like you've got season four of HBO's West World started.

I can see it now: We slowly pan out of a gas station sign, neon flickering. It reads "lead free $26.99/gal". We focus on our hero, He's covered by shadow, head under a helmet, eyes behind dark glasses, standing next to flat-bar bicycle hiding from view of the passing drone. He's running from the UCI, for the crime of using a hardtail mountain bike as a gravel bike...

They're in the south. Seriously, there was still a good chance a motorist would mow them down, even on a deserted road.
