”The Shimano XTR 12-speed cassette CS-M9101, the plastic spacer, which minimises noise, is firmly glued to the rear and is not included separately as with the predecessor CS-M9100”

Don't ask questions, just be happy you got your hands on one!

Kidding aside I had the same question, thanks
I believe the difference is the plastic spacer ring. With the 9100 it is a separate loose piece. With the 8100 and 7100 XT and SLX, it is adhered to the back of the cassette. The 9101 has the adhesive version is my understanding.

What could the difference be?
Certainly someone will come along to tell us.

I ran some mathematical analyses and determined that the difference is 1.
I have the 9101 with the thin clear plastic washer. The cassette is driving me crazy. It makes lots of clicking noise under load in the lower gears while climbing. I've read others having the same issue. I applied drops of oil on the rivets and will allow it to seep overnight and try again.

Anyone has had this issue?

Yes. With every XTR 12s cassette I have used (both 9100 and 9101). Not so much a click though. More of a creaking. The last one was last summer - it did it within a week or two. Warrantied easily enough, but it’s still annoying. I have a couple old ones that I lube and carry on using. Generally stay quiet for a few rides at least. I guess they’re technically covered under the three year warranty, but I’d feel bad warrantying a pretty worn cassette. They would probably cover it though.

I am no longer getting clicking sound. The xtr cassette is much lighter than the xt if you care. If you have the funds get the xtr.

How come ? What did you do to remove it ?

And do you have M9000 or M9101 ?

I have the M9101. I believe my noise was coming from a plastic freehub washer which I forgot to reinstall when I changed the ratchets from 36T to 60T. Reinstalling the washer got rid of the clicking noise.

Good to know.

I've had that problem with both the XTR cassettes 9100 and 9101. The one thing that I found keeps it quiet is using a KMC chain. Maybe the difference in the chain construction/shape is such that it keeps it from making noise. One shop told me the noise wasn't uncommon. I rode mine with the kmc chain over the past year no issues or noises. I normally buy Shimano chains but when they were scarce had purchased a couple kmc chains. I'd probably only buy another xtr cassette if it was highly discounted....the XT cassettes work just as good and a small weight penalty.
