I'm trying to adjust my rear derailleur, but I'm hearing a slight crunching sound from the chain on the cassette. It's not very loud. Is this unavoidable, or did I screw something up?

I lubed it before i started tuning. And yes, it's a slight grinding sound that is consistent. This is the first time I've messed with a derailleur.

what adjustments did you attempt??

Adjusting the B screw and H screw. I'm currently trying to align the H screw. I'm in the middle ring on the front gear, and smallest on the rear.

It is most likely trying to shift to the next cog. Turn cable adj clockwise 1/4 turn at a time until it stops.

I don't see the barrel adjuster on the derailleur... I have the Deore XT.

Look for it at the shifter or it could have inline adjusters .

It's where cable adjustments are made. Screws on derailleur adjust high and low stop points only.

That seems to be helping. The sound is almost inaudible now. Should it completely go away?

Yes, it should. Also, if you didn't already move screws on derailleur, don't. These are adjusted upon instalation and should not need to be adjusted again unless something gets bent. If adjusted wrong, can cause serious damage to driveline.

uh oh... I think I adjusted them correctly, before I did the pulley wasn't correctly aligned with the sprocket.

Just make sure that the H limit does not allow the derailleur to shift over the last cog, which will cause the chain to get jammed between wheel and cassette. Bad things can result!!!

When I shift up to the biggest sprocket, the grinding is quite noticeable. Should I adjust the tension again, and if so, which way?

If it is only in the biggest cog, then it likely is the H limit screw.
