Green Mountain Trails is joining the Rochester, VT club RASTA and our major objective moving forward is funding a 15 mi section of the Velomont trail which has already gone through the major step of NEPA approval
Here is the full social media release from RASTA:
RASTA is excited to welcome Matt Baatz and the iconic Green Mountain Trails (GMT) network in Pittsfield as part of our chapter! We'll combining some of our resources but GMT network will remain as is keeping it's local character and vibe.
GMT and RASTA has already been working closely together over the years to create trail connectivity between GMT and the new Rochester Valley Trails as part of Vermont Mountain Bike Association's proposed Velomont Trail.
The Velomont Trail to date includes 12 Vermont Mountain Bike Association chapters and partners with a goal to link up existing networks from Massachusetts to Canada with at least 70% of it being single track. The United States Forest Service (USFS), as part of the Robinson Integrated Resource Project, recently approved 15 miles of new single track Velomont Trail that will connect the communities of Rochester and Pittsfield. The 15 miles of approved single track trail also includes connectivity to Vermont Huts Association's new Chittenden Brook Hut (which was just completed late fall 2018). We're also working with the USFS to help improve the existing Contest Trail (which was the Green Mountain National Forest's very first mountain bike trail).
Combined with Velomont connectivity the Contest Trail would ultimately create a 30 mile loop (with only 6 miles on road sections) between Rochester and Pittsfield.
Currently, an estimated $479,650 is needed to construct the 15 miles of shovel ready Velomont single track trail (including bridges). We have A LOT of work to do so we need all the help we can get to help us launch and make the Velomont dream a reality.
It has taken us 5 years of planning and collaboration to get to this point and now it's time for us to build Velomont! For more information on Velomont on how to donate to this shovel ready section visit https://www.rastavt.org/velomont/
