Critique my Fatbike build

I've been interested in fatbikes like the Pugsley for a while (consider me chubby-curious). Jenson had the Pugsley frameset on sale for cheap, so I put together a quick build list to see how much the total would be. I spec'd out two rear wheels and I might set up one hub as a singlespeed just for fun. Some of the items are listed at single unit price when two are needed, but the total price is for both items, eg tires, tubes etc. Please critique my build, remind me of anything I missed, and let me know of any substitutions that might be worthwhile.

Surly Pugsley Frame and Fork $365.00
Large Marge Rims w/XT Hubs $200.00
Surly Endomorph 3.7" Tire $99.00
Surly Endomorph Tube $10.50
Cane Creek S-3 Headset $35.00
Truvativ Howitzer BB $40.00
Truvativ Hussefelt 3.1 Crankset $55.00
Sette APX Seatpost $24.00
WTB Pure V Race Saddle $35.00
Titec Hellbent Rip 3D Stem $7.00
Sette Duo OS Handle Bars $22.00
Lizard Skins Peaty Grips $23.00
Hayes Stroker Trail Brakes $70.00
Sram X7 Trigger Shifters $47.00
Sram X7 Rear Derailleur $38.00
Shimano SLX Front Derailleur $50.00
Sram PG950 Cassette $22.00
Sram PC971 Chain $22.00
Shimano M520 SPD Pedals $50.00
Alloy Water Bottle Cages $3.00

Total $1600

Looks good.

You need rim tape.

I guess I'll need some wide tape. Luckily, I have some laying around

Looks good...but:
You need 2x tires, innertubes, (rear)brakes.....And rimtape
And pedals :D
And the S7 FD doesn't fit...you need a Shimano E-Type FD :skep:

As I mentioned, although only single unit prices are listed for some items like wheels, tires, tubes and brakes, the total was calculated using two of these items. Thanks for the heads-up on the E-type derailleur. Found SLX front that will do the job.
If you are going to be riding in winter, you may want to consider grip shift, since it would be easier to use with gloves/mittens.

I've used Gripshifters, but I don't care for them. I shift my Sram X5 triggers just fine with big gloves on so I don't think it will be an issue. Thanks for the idea!

option
loose the surly tubes, save cash and weight
Would regular tubes work in such a big tire? What's my best alternative to the Endomorph tube?
looks good to go. it will get you on the fatties, then you are hooked.
here is a thread discussing the tube options for endos:

i'll recommend that you use a ss specific hub, if you want ss, instead of the xt hub. it will make for a stronger wheel. switching them out will be a pain, since you will have to deal with chain length, unless you can use the RD as a tensioner (not sure if that works).

Thanks for the idea on the proper SS hub. I was reading Sheldon Brown, and he put an SS hub on his in case he busted an RD or hanger, he would swap the wheels, shorten the chain (which isn't that hard), and go. Either way, it's not that big a deal, because I would probably rarely do that.
Shipping?

Jenson USA does not have the frames. Check availability.

Add $230 to your price and get one from Webcyclery?

Grip shift gets harder to work with tired / cold hands. Triggers or thumb shifters are better IMO.

I agree that it wouldn't be very hard to shorten the chain. My strategy to alleviate this was to go alfine, which is costly. but I liked the idea of swapping to my fixed wheel on a whim (you have to like that idea a lot though - $$).
Yea, I was just gonna post that they don't have any in stock now. They had some yesterday. I was gonna order one from Jenson yesterday...had it in my cart and everything...did some stuff in the warehouse...came back and it said not available:madman: That's what I get for waiting.
For shortening the chain, just run two powerlinks, with one set to the correct SS chain length. Then simply disconnect, remove the offending portion of chain, remove the RD if you want, and run it SS.

Crap. I didn't see they weren't available.

That is a bloody brilliant idea.
You might need some spokes, and possibly labor for a wheel build.
Definitely going to need some cable housing and maybe some cables if your shifters/brakes don't come with them.
I only see the price for one endomorph tire.
definitely no on the surly tubes, mine are sitting on a shelf in the garage waiting to be used as sleds b/c they're so damn thick and heavy. 2.75" QBP.

I would also steer away from the 135 fork that comes with the pugs. that way you only have to have one offset wheel in the event you want something other than large marges and you can use a std xt front hub. Also consider a mid-rise bar and bar ends for comfort.
