I have not tried, but I've heard an interesting method suggested here. Hold just the emitter with tweezers, while heating the star from underneath with a heat gun or cigarette lighter. When the solder melts, the star falls off.

hi all
how hard is it too remove cree leds off a single star to make a triple board/quad as i have some single leds on stars and have some 16mm trilpe optics and a 20mm quad optic.

troutie did it recently and posted an amusing video of the process as well. I'm not sure what thread it was on but if you scan through the posts I'm sure you'll find it. Either that or some helpful soul might be able to point you in the right direction.
Just a skillet on the stove top. Works well.
