Creaking Vanilla RLC???

1011 Views 11 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  be350ka
I've read the previous post regarding the crown and steer tube creaking and it seems Im having the exact same problem.

It is only under heavy breaking and when I take the front tire off, flip the bike up-side-down, and pull on the fork do I hear the creaking. It is bad, really bad, a horrible noise! It has progressed in its loudness in the past week and Im starting to worry a bit about my Vanilla, honestly. Im going to call FOX on Monday and see what the deal is about having it repaired and sent back.

Has anyone sent theirs in for service and received good remarks?---etc.

Thanks!

How old is your fork? If it is one year or less you should be covered by a warrenty. If not your going to be shelling out some big time bucks to get it fixed.
HEY!! Let us know what you hear from Fox on Monday. Just for fun, see what they say it would cost if it is out of warranty. I too have a Van RLC and am begining to worry about this problem.
I'll let you know. I bought it new in January so Im still under warrenty. I hate that the fork has come up w/ this problem and Im going to let FOX know about it tomorrow. I'll let ya'll know once I speak w/ them.
Thanks.

common issue

I have a Float 100mm RLC that the steertube creaked in the crown. According to Fox it's not a safety issue:) In my case they were not inclined to replace it under warranty because it was not threat to my well being, just really annoying. Any how I had some Fox customer service issues working with the US military and living in Germany.Any how the fox guys here in germany hooked me up w/ new uppers for free after they rebuilt both my front and rear Floats. New crown no creak.

They claim to have impregnated the newer steertubes with some sort of teflon so they don't creak any more, well see how long the new ones last.

The Crown Assembly is the retail 159,-€,

That's what I was quoted for a new upper assembly in Germany, making it darn near $190.

That is really an unfortunate answer from Fox. People didnt buy a fork so it could become creaky after 6 months of use only to find out that it might not be warrantied. It would really P me off if I was told that the $450+ that was spent on a fork will only buy me a warranty if it is a safety issue. Furthermore, if a new crown has been developed to fix this issue then it aparently is an issue now isnt it!?! GO FOR THE GUSTO. MAKE THEM FIX IT UNDER WARRANTY!!!!

Now that my rant is over I will tell you about my experience with Fox CS. I have a DHX Air and had the VERY common stuck down issue. It was a very common problem and they (Fox) didnt ask one question and gave me a RA for repair. The CS department was great to work with and had the shock back in 10 days as good as new. So, I have no reason to believe that this situation would be any different since it is a well documented situation. Now, I just hope that mine starts to creak so I can get a warranty replacement before Oct. ;)

Called FOX today and told them to problem. Since Im w/ in my one year period, they told me to ship it back to a replacment (upper portion only). Ive got the RA number and it will go out first thing tomorrow morning.

I hope they fix it right this time.

Be sure to let us know when you get it back. I sure hope it isnt the 3 weeks that they are telling others. Did they say what it would cost out of warranty?
They didn't say what it would cost out of warrenty or how long it would take. I may wait untill I finish this summer season out to send it back. I was planning my next few weeks tonight and Im going to miss quite a few races but I may try and get another fork or my hardtail up and running while the Fox is out of commission.

I will update as soon as I know anything.

Yes, Yes I read your post. I was directing the GO FOR THE GUSTO comment to TOEHEAD. But, none the less thanks for the info. It is good to hear that Fox recognized that your issue was a manufacturer defect and fixed it out of warranty for free. Good work!!
