I've got a set of 2001 Avid Mechanical brakes on my (recently aquired) 2001 Santa Cruz Bullit. The brakes are "broke in", and on my old hard-tail I never thought I needed more power. The Bullit, however, is a faster, more capable bike, and I have found myself wanting more from my brakes on more than one occasion. I would like to keep my current calipers, but I notice they no longer make the same style rotor that I have, or even the same size. So here's my thought:

Purchase 185 mm rotor for front, with new 185 adapter for caliper
Purchase 160 mm rotor for rear, with new 160 mm adapter for caliper

I can't put anything larger on the rear of the bike- it's an early Bullit, and there is no room in the swingarm. I would like the "clean-sweep" style rotors, well mostly because I don't care for the "bling" factor of anything else, and these old ones , however difficult to break in, work exceptionally well. To get more power I've even been "dialing in" my Speed-Dial levers. I would only get the new rotor for the rear to have more of a matching set, as the new ones really don't look like the old ones.

Will this work with the old-style calipers?

Thanks,
Clay

No problem at all. The older calipers work just fine with the 185mm rotors. I still prefer the original calipers and run 185 rotors on several bikes.

You can use the 160mm rotor on the rear by filing down the mount slightly. Only need to remove ~2mm (the mounts are the same for the new and old calipers).
Or you can get new 165mm rotors on ebay. There are always several listed.

My favorite rotors are the Galfer Wavey, though. Better in the wet and greatly increased pad life in all conditions.

Thanks for the info :) I really don't normally ride in the wet- just really dry dusty conditions usually. I'm just not looking forward to breaking in new rotors again :( I did experiance the "pulsing" problem when I got them originally, and at the time Avid said it was probably because I'm such a light rider (150 pounds?) but I've found that by putting the rotor & pads in question on the rear of my bike, and really pounding on that brake, they start working really well. I won't be able to do that with a 185mm rotor though... so I'll make sure to take the advice on this board for break-in.

Thanks,
Clay
