Crankset compatability?

I'm giving my bike a total rebuild, and I'm trying to be conscious of part sizes and compatabilty when I'm buying. Some things I'm buying online, but mostly I'm buying from my LBS. Would I be ok buying any crankset online, and then having my LBS get me a matching BB, or is there a chance I'd buy a crankset that wont fit my bike? I know BB's have to be sized correctly, but I'm not sure about cranksets...

as long as you have a matching bb, any crankset will work
