Im riding a 2000 Schwinn Homegrown, with 68mm English threaded, 112.5mm BB the model is M 952, the crankset is an old XTR. Crankset is ok since I use the bike for comuting in the moment, but the BB is out of production since 2004 and its very hard to find and costs as much as a new crankset with BB. So I decided to buy an SLX FC 660, 48 36 24 crankset. How do I determine if its going to fit the cassette and chain and how do I get the whole chainline thing right?

Probably okay. It'll probably throw your chainline off a little, but it's usually off a little on a multispeed bike.

Is the one you're looking at a 9-speed or a 10-speed?

The 48t ring will require your front derailleur to sit higher. Not much, but it could be a problem for some mounting styles.

The old and the new one are 9 speed, i have a XT front derailleur in can be moved higher with no problem. So guess I won't have any problems with the cassette and chain?

It all sounds good to me.

People often recommend getting one's bottom bracket shell faced before moving to an external.
